It's interesting to me that some of us see the past and see what was better then and wish we had some of that back and others look back and only see what was worse. Some of us look back and see, for example, that in the 1950's divorce rates, single parent homes, births out of wedlock, and incarceration rates were lower for all races. We wish that those statistics could be revived, that the rampant absence of fathers could be addressed to return to two-parent homes, to stay married, to raise kids, especially boys, to be responsible providers. What's baffling, though, is that these wishes are deemed 'regressive' because critics can't (or won't) believe that people wishing for SOME things from the past are not wishing for ALL things from the past. For example, no one is proposing segregation, death trap cars with no seat belts, a 90% smoking rate from actors, homes without A/C or eliminating the internet, cell phones, or satellite TV.
The shotgun example from the OP is the best example of what has evaporated in our society in the last chunk of years. I graduated in the mid 80's. My Junior year we had an assembly specifically to address the NEW RULE about bringing your shotguns, rifles, pistols, etc on campus. While no one was bringing the weapons indoors anyway, there were approximately 100 weapons in the parking lot, in plain view, and in unlocked cars, and had been for 50 years, with exactly ZERO shootings. Why no shootings? Was it because there were no arguments, no fights? Of course not. It was because all of the kids had parents, almost always 2 of them, who taught morals, enforced rules at home, who dragged their kids to church (not a pitch for church, but for parents setting the rules and enforcing them) and who spanked their sons at home for getting spanked at school. There was a COMMUNITY of people who watched each other's kids, and backs. No kid would have shot up the school because every kid felt a part of the school, of the town. THAT is what those you insult as 'regressive' are longing to revive, not segregation, date rape, or whatever other ill dominates your memory of the past.
EDIT: The school employing the 'no gun' rule was not based on actual safety, but on saving money on insurance. Having a no gun rule lowered insurance rates........
It's interesting to me that some of us see the pas... (

I was born in the mid fities and went to school in the sixities and seventies an saw a decline in discipline in the schools.
I carried a pocket knife to school everyday and there was no issue, just like with the firearms.
School shootings are not limited to angry or uncontrollable kids, a few years back a friend sent me several regarding Indian school children from the library of congress and one photo in particular was captioned us army patrol massacres school children and their white teacher, then sandy hook comes along and we blame the mother and the kid. We need to pay attention to history because I am here can guarantee tee that some here in the past the same atrocities have been committed and by so called civilized adults. I am here did not keep the photos knowing that they could be found in the Library of Congress.
My wife of 35 years and I raised 3 boys and they all have jobs and are successful in life. The oldest is part owner in a Logistic s Company and drives for Uber and Lyft, the Middle son is a truck driver in Oklahoma is married with two boys and a daughter, and my youngest works for WINCO as a lead cashier. The oldest and youngest still live at home. None of the three drink or do drugs and as far as I know have never tried drugs of the illegal variety.
Schools no longer concentrate on the core subjects (reading, Writing and Arithmetic) but concentrate on m loving the students from one grade to the next. Teachers complain that the class sizes are too large if they have twenty students or the class rooms are overcrowded. My class size averaged 35 students and in some schools that I attended they were in two story buildings and the classes for the incoming students were on the second story and there was no air conditioning, cooling was done with fans.
People complain about their kids having too much homework and they don't have enough time to do their homework and their after school activities. In China the kids go to school six days a week and the amount of homework will usually take them to 10 at night and only then can they participate in any extra activities. They have to show that they have completed all of their homework. And the thing is the parents help the kids with the homework and I don't mean they do it for them. The kids are respectful of their elders/parents and they wear a uniform to school.
