You forgot to mention that minorities and women were kept in their places. I bet they were much happier in 1957. Troglodytes of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your ignorance. (PS This is satirical in case that is difficult to understand.)

Common sense was a big part of that earlier time period. Liberalism helped us grow in many areas of society but something happened along the way.
It’s complex, but there is a definite societal breakdown today. Leftism is rapidly replacing Liberalism, and this should be a warning to all.
If Democrats who have largely adopted this ideology of the Left ever regains power, well there are plenty of examples to illustrate the outcome. Take a look at Downtown LA. Imagine that on a national scale.

I am a grandmother and have talked to many like myself. It seems everyone I talk to will give their grandchildren a good spanking when the situation warrants it, while the kids parents opt for drugs and therapy instead. Yet no one asks, why do these kids behave so much better for the grandparents?

I am sure some of the post exaggerated for the purpose of humor but has a lot of truth in it. We are losing our ability to compete and it’s getting worse every year. My family has been in education for years and for the first time most would say to find a good private school if you can afford it.
We have lost the reality that to feel good about yourself depends on you. You try, sometimes succeed, sometimes fail, and try again. Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes than our successes. We owe our children the ability to learn life’s lessons. When they graduate and face “real world 101” it is a real shocker.

I was at primary school in the 1940's... grammar school in the 1950's Catholic and Jesuits. Beaten unmercifully for the smallest failing,

serious effects on confidence, initiative and self expression.....but I survived...with a half decent education and a leaning toward atheism !

Things seemed to get better for my kids, some discipline, streaming specialization, grammar schools and technical schools.

decent education and happy kids.......seemed to be a good compromise between abusive 1940's and chaotic 2000's

I suspect similar in the USA ?

How have we gone from one extreme to the other?

Teachers and many parents are unhappy, Taxes are being miss-spent educational standards are falling.

It must come as a severe culture shock for todays kids to whom discipline is unknown to find at a certain stage

in their development that they cant have everything they want and that severe punishments are inflicted for certain behaviors

that were excused when they were in their formative years.

I'm with the sentiment that WAY too many (boys especially) are diagnosed with ADD. My daughter had a pair of teachers try to diagnose her, and had we blindly pursued their thoughts, my girl might have had her dyslexia go undiagnosed for a few extra years. As it was, after addressing her dyslexia, she became a ravenous reader, sitting perfectly still for hours on end, even having to be forcibly dragged to the table to eat.

As to the RLS jibe, I have a video of my legs that will make you squirm, not because of my legs themselves, but because my calves usually look as though they are filled with a parasitic worm colony. I have no RLS diagnosis, but I'm betting I have something similar. There are nights that the twitching of the calves keeps me from sleeping 'normally'. Not enough symptoms for me to risk side effects of meds, tho.

Wow, does that bring back memories! I can still recall nearly 60-years later my 6th grade science teacher, Mr. Hunter, who had a paddle that had holes drilled in it to make it more aerodynamic and lighter to increase speed.

When I or others would misbehave, which of course we did at times, he would bring the offender up to his desk where they would get a few licks from the paddle on their buttocks. When I told my father the first time it happened he told me that I was lucky that he wasn't there for it would have been worse.

Justice served swiftly and all of the students that went through his class were all the better because of it for we learned that our actions had consequences.

Subject: Re: HIGH SCHOOL 1957 vs. 2017 ! ! ! !
By today's standards none of us were supposed to ever make it.

HIGH-SCHOOL
1957 vs. 2017

Scenario 1:

Jack goes duck hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2017- School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:

Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2017 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled - even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:

Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2017 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2017 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being spanked herself, and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.
2014 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:

Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2017 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2017 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The, FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957–In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2017- Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

It's interesting to me that some of us see the past and see what was better then and wish we had some of that back and others look back and only see what was worse. Some of us look back and see, for example, that in the 1950's divorce rates, single parent homes, births out of wedlock, and incarceration rates were lower for all races. We wish that those statistics could be revived, that the rampant absence of fathers could be addressed to return to two-parent homes, to stay married, to raise kids, especially boys, to be responsible providers. What's baffling, though, is that these wishes are deemed 'regressive' because critics can't (or won't) believe that people wishing for SOME things from the past are not wishing for ALL things from the past. For example, no one is proposing segregation, death trap cars with no seat belts, a 90% smoking rate from actors, homes without A/C or eliminating the internet, cell phones, or satellite TV.

The shotgun example from the OP is the best example of what has evaporated in our society in the last chunk of years. I graduated in the mid 80's. My Junior year we had an assembly specifically to address the NEW RULE about bringing your shotguns, rifles, pistols, etc on campus. While no one was bringing the weapons indoors anyway, there were approximately 100 weapons in the parking lot, in plain view, and in unlocked cars, and had been for 50 years, with exactly ZERO shootings. Why no shootings? Was it because there were no arguments, no fights? Of course not. It was because all of the kids had parents, almost always 2 of them, who taught morals, enforced rules at home, who dragged their kids to church (not a pitch for church, but for parents setting the rules and enforcing them) and who spanked their sons at home for getting spanked at school. There was a COMMUNITY of people who watched each other's kids, and backs. No kid would have shot up the school because every kid felt a part of the school, of the town. THAT is what those you insult as 'regressive' are longing to revive, not segregation, date rape, or whatever other ill dominates your memory of the past.

EDIT: The school employing the 'no gun' rule was not based on actual safety, but on saving money on insurance. Having a no gun rule lowered insurance rates........

I don't post much, being a lurker, but this is the radical left's answer to whatever hurts their feelings-namely resorting to vicious name-calling.
Others have chimed in with "keeping women repressed" etc, and I can say my mom was born in the 20s, went to Berkley, before it became a leftist beacon, and became a housewife in the 50s. She ran the house/family with an iron hand, and would take offense at the notion she was repressed. But maybe therein could be found a reason there were not such a number of school shootings, etc., that being someone was taking care of the kids. Now there are helicopter parents, the kids are on their own all day playing violent vid games, no structure to their lives.
But the left would have us believe that were are enlightened now; I think we have reached or even passed the tipping point.

Change is inevitable. It is not 1950 and never will be again, no matter how much some wish it to be.And unfortunately, too many of them that wish it are sitting in state govts. and the national govt., trying their best to return us to the good old days, when Blacks, women, the insane, the crippled, the intellectually challenged, the poor..knew their place and stayed in it.

But the winds of change have blown strong, and today, those people who are being freed from the stigma of being 'not perfect' and not worthy, if they have to stir the pot to get it done, so be it.

It's always been a struggle between those who have and those who have not. Right now, the have nots are making progress, even in the face of hate and disrespect. Perhaps we will one day will follow the greatest commandment..."Love one another".
