I work alone in a place late at night for my “day” job. The other night I was looking for something and came across a bunch of rolling cases. In one, nicely tucked away in their little cubby hole in the case was two Canon 5D Mark IIIs with big long zoom lenses. There is no security and no cameras in the building. And yes I was tempted, dammit. I’m sorry. I’m human. LOL But I didn’t take them ok. I also walked by three professional Sony video cameras on sturdy rolling tripods. I was salivating so bad. All I have is a Canon 5D Mark II. Don’t judge me!!

The true meaning of integrity (or lack of it) is what you do when you think no one is looking.

You, sir, have integrity.

They may of had trackers in them. I work at a school and their nice cameras and laptops are all teachable. So you did the. Right thing. They would have found them

I've always tried to live my life so that when I look in the mirror every morning, I can have the respect of the guy looking back.

It pays to be honest. I always think how would I feel if was mine and it was stolen? Pretty awful. I am sure in time you will get the camera you want. Perhaps someone on UHH will donate you their spare camera that is just sitting on their shelf not being used as it is no longer needed.

No judgement- but kudos.

We are all tempted. It's what we do with that temptation that defines our integrity. Footman retained his integrity and shared it with us. Good for him. Perhaps it will help some of us maintain ours.

Sorry, but the fact that you were even tempted to take expensive gear that was not yours is a bit disturbing. Telling us does not make you a saint. Own it.

I would ask everyone critizing the OP if they ever purposely exceed the speed limit or go past a stop sign with a rolling stop.

Of course stealing from ones work place is very bad form. I believe it is a criminal act.

Having said that, I feller I contracted to "gave" me a plain screwdriver to facilitate access
to the roof of a high rise Hotel. He then left the site; making returning the screwdriver a 2 hour journey,
which would cost more than the screwdriver is worth... I still have the screwdriver and feel guilty
every time I use it.

I would have pointed out the obvious risk of break-in and theft to the owner(s) and suggested they get some security in place and secure their equipment. The thought of stealing their equipment wouldn't have entered my mind.

Since you ask I have exceeded the speed limit and I have failed to completely stop at an occasional stop sign, but I do neither with intent. I do my best to follow traffic laws which are for my safety and the safety of others. However, if you are implying that occasionally rolling through a stop sign is in any way similar to considering stealing someones material goods when no one is watching, that's a huge stretch.

It is called stealing. Period.
