I used to have a saying at the bottom of my email that said “A saint is just a sinner who fell and got back up”. Fits well in this situation.
If I had stolen it I would never have the pride that comes from saving up and buying something that is rightfully mine. Every time I used that stolen equipment I would have a bad feeling in my gut. Not worth it.
fotoman150 - - - you were tempted by the devil, and you defeated him, and Our Lord wrote that down in His book by your name. Good for you.
[quote=mwsilvers]Sorry, but the fact that you were even tempted to take expensive gear that was not yours is a bit disturbing. Telling us does not make you a saint.
He didn't say he was a saint. I take it you have never been tempted?I would call it a confession. And confessions are good for the soul! 😊

But your integrity has been compromised by telling the world that you were tempted.
Nonsense! Not many have the integrity to admit to that sort of thing.

I work alone in a place late at night for my “day” job. The other night I was looking for something and came across a bunch of rolling cases. In one, nicely tucked away in their little cubby hole in the case was two Canon 5D Mark IIIs with big long zoom lenses. There is no security and no cameras in the building. And yes I was tempted, dammit. I’m sorry. I’m human. LOL But I didn’t take them ok. I also walked by three professional Sony video cameras on sturdy rolling tripods. I was salivating so bad. All I have is a Canon 5D Mark II. Don’t judge me!!

While I admire your honesty it would seem, from a LEO point of view, that you would be caught immediately if you had stolen the cameras. By your own statement, you work alone. Had the items come up missing you would most likely have been the first person spoken to. As you are an honest person, intensive questioning from the first officer on the scene such as, Did you take the items, would leave you right there, still at your job, admitting you had taken them in a moment of weakness.
As a LEO I have been in your predicament numerous times, first on the scene of a burglary, investigating a coroner case all by myself in a large mansion filled with valuables. But honesty for most of us comes shining through. It isn't even the thought of I will be easily caught if I take this, but plain and simple honesty in your heart. I am proud of you but you knew you would not really take these things.
Next time don't open the cases,
Dennis

I was in the bank yesterday and didn't rob them. May I have some praise also, please?
Were you tempted to hand a teller a note demanding money?

BS!!! We are all tempted from time to time. So what? 99% of us resist the temptation and realize it is bad. Then we go on our way. Please tell us honestly you have never been tempted to do anything illegal. We will all be right here while you own it to yourself.
Oh to be among the perfect.

Our Lord is always watching.

1- Why would you tell us?
2- Why should we care?
Oh wait, "Atta Boy"

You made the right decision for two reasons. First, it's morally correct. Second, you might get caught. Good citizenship and self-preservation are not mutually exclusive.

The guilt and fear of being caught would haunt you for a long time. You'd be looking over your shoulder too. You would probably have lost a lot of sleep. Someone would know that you are in the habit of working alone in that place, and that you are probably the only one that does that, so the suspicion would be strong that you did it anyway.
I hope you wiped your fingerprints off the case. Someone else might have a bright idea of taking them, wearing gloves, then discarding the empty cases and your prints would point to you.....
Take only photographs...
....best not to leave footprints either

They are a dance event promoter. They use the cameras all the time. The walls are loaded with shots of dancers. Some of the shots are really poorly done. They also do a group shot of the employees every year and post an 8x10 on the wall. They have massive amounts of those rolling black cases like you would see at a concert with roadies moving them around.
Here's something to consider that no one else has mentioned. The fact that they are a business means the cameras are listed as inventory on the company's accounting books. If they would come up missing, someone, if caught, would be looking at charges of aggravated burglary, receiving stolen property, and probably a few other charges but all of them felonies. Overcoming temptation is ALWAYS a good thing.

It might be worth adding a quick note that many cameras embed their serial number in the EXIF data. Anyone who uses a stolen camera has to know how to strip the serial number out, and has to remember to do it on every picture.
Otherwise, sooner or later, someone will share one of your photos on the web, and the EXIF data will let the original owner know that you stole their camera.
So for all the posters who ask for pictures and exif data. There you go it's why I don't wanna post photos.
It’s what you do or don’t do, when you know no one is watching you, that defines who you are.
