I too worked in prisons (five different federal prisons) and the incarcerated almost always had an excuse instead of a reason for becoming a criminal. Some did not give a reason and I can only guess the reasoning for their law-breaking. There were some who had become institutionalized after multiple sentances and found they were better off inside than on the street.

So every white person living in the South is living on easy street?? Ever hear the term, white trash?? There was and is a prejudice that is inexcusable. How do think a white boy would be treated in a black neighborhood.
Black America's problem is other black people. Black people are killed by the hundreds if not a thousand every year by other black people. How many are shot, stabbed assaulted by other black people? Thousands more. How many black women are raped by black males? Almost 60% of black children are born out of wedlock. This in its self is not the end of the world. What makes it so tragic is the black male who donated his sperm is in the wind. He shares no level of responsibility to or for this child. That child is never going to have the family support it needs and is so necessary to be a success in this world. You want to point fingers look there.

I was born in the mid 40s and remember all of that very well. As a teen in the 50s and early 60s I had a DJ business and played all those tunes for dances or hops as they were called then. That was a long time ago but those clips make it seem like yesterday. Thanks for sharing the good times.

These songs brought back many memories!! Our Cajun people here in Southwest Louisiana also had our own music and customs and provided us with many songs to remember --- ahhh those were the days------ and come to think about it we STILL have these Cajun french songs and still going strong (we have our dance halls and restaurants, etc.). But I can see some changes----thanks for the memories.

I never have pointed fingers but you have a serious problem. When I went to basic training in Texas I was shocked to see that the black airman were not allowed to eat except in the kitchen when we stopped on our way to Mississippi on Air Force buses. I wondered what country were we in. Bathrooms, Men, Women and blacks. Back to the original post, it was a great time to experience but also one of a changing time in our country, it wasn't all just "Rock & Roll". BTW , the video was and is a great reflection of a time long gone, just one page in the history book of America.

There's an entertainer in NZ that sings that Johnny Mathis number "Chances are' and my Glenda melts when she hears it. We do a sequence dance in this part of the world called the Merilyn to A white Sport Coat and I often think that the guy should have worn a pair of pants as well and she might have gone to the ball with him.

You have spoken the very same words I speak often when this subject comes up. I agree with every word. I have been called a racist for saying at all about the problems with the black race. Isn’t it amazing though that my tax dollars to pay for welfare go to these very same people who call me a racist and say I have no right whatsoever to say basically anything about the black race unless it is praising them. I say horse shit. Blacks comment frequently about whitey, how whitey can’t keep the black man down and so on.

Keep him down??? I would love to see every single black person get an education, get a job and be a success in life. But it is not me or you who is stopping their upward mobility. It is themselves. I have sat in on conversations between black female inmates, one of which was to soon be released on parole. If she kept her nose clean and did not violate the conditions of her parole she would be totally done with prison unless she violated parole or committed a new felony. Most of us would welcome the opportunity to finally be on the streets and look forward to starting a new life. But the fly in the ointment was her prison friends, her family, kept telling her to either violate parole or get a new charge. Either way she would spend many more years in lockup. I sat right there and heard this conversation more than once. Screwy huh? I asked the inmate why on earth she would even consider coming back. She said this was her, “family”. Inmates start their own prison families to substitute for not having a family on the outside. It took about six months but she did come back. Many also came back for their family. A shame but sure as hell not whitey keeping them down.

In male facilities it is common for a man to be in prison and then have his sons or nephews join him. It is considered a rite of passage. There is no social stigma about being in prison. Again, it is expected. Again this is not the fault of whitey.
