BTW....Both my daughters attended Stonewall Jackson Elementary here in Dallas. Great school. They had to change the name in the midst of shoveling history under the rug. What they did to Lee and Jackson they're now trying to do to Jefferson and then the foundations of the country.

I am willing to bet a sizeable sum that you are far more likely to die in your car, driving to the tree location

In Australia this is a well known hazard. Eucalyptus can drop very large - as in tonne weight - branch without warning, particularly during dry spells - ahh I think nowadays we have wet spells and are dry most of the time! I have seen cars crushed in very large and well trafficked car parking areas.
Tourists park under trees.

Just, if you hear a craaack.....

The "Craaack" of a limb is just the tree's way of yelling out "Fore!"

Eucalyptus trees are 'famed' for it. So much so that I believe they have been nicknamed widowmakers!

The sign is probably photographed more than Stonewall’s gravesite.

It does happen! My wife and I were enjoying an afernoon at our place we call 'The hill', mostly wooded with a 1/4 mile driveway. As we were sitting, shooting the bull I heard a craaacck and was fortunate enough to get her out of the chair and out from under a limb which had fell. She was sitting in an old metal lawn chair. The limb hit directly on the chair destroying it and very well could have killed her. It sent the "Bo" the boxer dog to the other end of the 12 acres. It does happen!

When visiting Stonewall Jackson's gravesite in Lexington, VA, we were greeted with this sign. Who knew trees posed such a threat? I don't know about the rest of you but I'm simply not going to walk under trees, anymore.

LOL,
CYA sign, the trees are out to get you folks!!!
Shit happens!!! people get over it. I see "Widow makers" every time I go on an outing, Be aware of your surroundings, I have heard limbs fall many times while in the woods. Haven't hit yet, but I do get the property owners info just in case. So I can sue if it does happen. (J/K)

Widow Maker is a well known term of hikers. Occasionally looking up and being aware of your surroundings goes a long way, especially when it's windy.

Those trees are dieing or dry rotting thus limbs could fall at any given moment. In fact, some park services are going around marking trees for possible danger or hazards to visitors. The grave yards knows it attaches visitors so the sign covers the graveyard maintenance from being sued. just like walking into a restaurant with a yellow floor marking "wet floor" so if you slip, the restaurant can't be held accountable or liable.

I would be willing to bet that if you looked at each case, you would find that most of them happened during or after high winds or storms, after a flood or ice storm, during a land clearing event, an auto wreck into the tree, or when being cut. Very few trees fall without some sort of push.

Remember the advice about not hiding under a tree in a storm? It's not just the risk of lightning electrocution. Falling branches can get you, too.

Nice, sunny day in the park with a light breeze? Verrry low risk.

Most folks know better than to walk through woods after an ice storm, or during high winds.
I would be willing to bet that if you looked at ea... (show quote)
