It happens. Tree fell down and killed a father and son in their car on a perfectly nice day near here end of last month:

Well, if the sign does not warn you, all those tombstones should do the trick. They should have read the sign.

Just, if you hear a craaack.....

I wonder if that's considered a sound? Does the person hearing it, have to live?

They do.
My wife and I were having a picnic on a Memorial Day by the river in the park and a huge branch cracked, we ran and it fell where we were. Large enough to kill.
We were hiking in the hills at a different time taking photos and a breeze came up and again heard a crack, above, and ran just before a large heavy branch fell.
Finally at our home our 125 year old tree lost a portion of a large branc that when it hit the ground made it shake.
So yes we are cautious but still enjoy trees and hikes in forests.

I have a 90+ year old plane tree in my front yard. Technically it's city property. If it lifts the sidewalk it's on me to fix it. If it drops a branch on somebody and injures someone it's on me to pay up. If it needs maintenance to keep those things from happening it's on me. But it's a city tree. I can't just hire anyone to trim it. It has to be someone approved by the city. I love the tree. It keeps things cool during Sacramento's blazing summer heat. It cost me about $900 every 5 years to have a crew clean it up.

I would be willing to bet that if you looked at each case, you would find that most of them happened during or after high winds or storms, after a flood or ice storm, during a land clearing event, an auto wreck into the tree, or when being cut. Very few trees fall without some sort of push.

Remember the advice about not hiding under a tree in a storm? It's not just the risk of lightning electrocution. Falling branches can get you, too.

Nice, sunny day in the park with a light breeze? Verrry low risk.

Most folks know better than to walk through woods after an ice storm, or during high winds.

Often here in N. California, it happens on a very hot day. The extreme heat causes the tree to suck up a lot of water making the branches heavier and crack … boom....

There is a state park on the Delaware River-Rariton Canal called Bulls Island, a lovely place where I spent many a weekend tent camping with my children. I wanted to do the same with my grandson and granddaughter, but found, to my surprise, that the campground proper is permanently closed to visitors.

It seems that the high water table causes weakened root systems which cause trees to fall, and, on one occasion, with fatal results.

We always enjoyed what seemed like inevitable downpours that would strike during the night. You could feel the water passing under the tent floor (great little tent, always kept us dry).

Although I am disappointed that we can no longer camp there, I have to respect the decision of the park rangers to disallow camping in favor of safety. I can only imagine the grief of the parents and friends of the two 14-year olds who died in the incident mentioned previously in this thread.

Well, my first thought is ‘Lucky you! _This_ is your most pressing problem?’
Fact of life - trees shed limbs upon occasion, for various reasons... or no reason at all. California oaks are notorious for this at any time of year, without warning; native Indians would not sit under oaks for this very reason!
Just another one of the hazards of simply being alive....

My great-great grandmother and her baby were killed by a large falling branch falling through the roof in a storm. In Gisela, AZ.

Maybe its safer to stay out of the sun also with its cancer causing properties.... Actually staying inside your older historic home and sucking up asbestos particles may be the better plan; plenty of time to stay on the HOG ! Seriously though, I live surrounded by mature trees and I do have thoughts about limbs falling on the dogs.

When it's your time, it's your time. Tree, car accident, slip and fall, health issue, it's not in your hands. It's in God's hands when it's your time.

Well, to bad people cannot think on their own anymore. I listen to news and I find flaws everywhere. If it's windy out and the tree is swaying all over ... don't walk under it! Simple, like camping under a big dead tree. Hum, maybe NOT. LOL Or like keeping food in your tent in bear country! Yes, we have signs as everyone wants to sue. It's a shame. Now in the giant red woods it's a different story as a little limb is like a tree here! I'll bet they have the same signs there too, for good reason.
