When visiting Stonewall Jackson's gravesite in Lexington, VA, we were greeted with this sign. Who knew trees posed such a threat? I don't know about the rest of you but I'm simply not going to walk under trees, anymore.

Chicken Little would be proud...

I suppose it COULD happen. Come to think of it, it probably DID happen, somewhere on Earth, so some local lawyer wanted to disavow the city's responsibility for anyone getting hurt by it. (Lawyer had to justify his/her fee that day...)

We see this same silliness all the time, now. Unless the wind is blowing hard, the chance is pretty small that you will walk under a tree and get bonked on the head. But as long as there's a chance... the attorneys think, "WE NEED A SIGN!!!"

LIFE is freaking dangerous, people! Get over it... You could be hit by a meteorite any day, now.

Suggest you avoid Sequoia and Redwood National Parks at all costs.

That's why they are clearing the rain forest. They pose too great a hazard to ignore anymore.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
I live about 30 miles from Lexington.
My wife and I took a horse and carriage tour there 2 years ago. It was pretty interesting.
In the early days Lexington didn't have a name, for a long time, it was just called that "town".

A man that I bought a house from in 1998 was killed by a falling limb a few years later so it can happen. Full disclosure: He was beginning to cut it down with a chain saw and was causing it to vibrate.

Well I guess you could win the lottery before that happens.

This happens quite regularly with Eucalyptus ( gum trees ) trees. I have seen a large limb crash down from one on a perfectly calm sunny day in Canberra, Australia. Numerous people have been killed by these.

Chicken Little would be proud... br br I suppose ... (show quote)

according to Google, about 100 people are killed by falling trees & limbs per year. That's far more than are killed by snake bites in a year, or dog bites for that matter.

It happened (a tree limb) on a trail in Philly a few years ago, killed the jogger.

I could care less, I like being under trees, this will not change a thing! Known that anyway since I was a little kid!

I would be willing to bet that if you looked at each case, you would find that most of them happened during or after high winds or storms, after a flood or ice storm, during a land clearing event, an auto wreck into the tree, or when being cut. Very few trees fall without some sort of push.

Remember the advice about not hiding under a tree in a storm? It's not just the risk of lightning electrocution. Falling branches can get you, too.

Nice, sunny day in the park with a light breeze? Verrry low risk.

Most folks know better than to walk through woods after an ice storm, or during high winds.
