My 1969 FTn still works great
The meter battery can be cobbled together by the staff at Batteries Plus for very little cost
Works great

My F doesn’t have a hard stop at T. One click counter-clockwise and you’re at 1/1000 second.

Same here. That makes it difficult to set shutter speeds without the speeds marked on the dial.

It looks like you now have a reference photograph for the speeds on the dial. Many computer monitors and TV's run at 60Hz. Number the stops on the dial then take a picture with each position, ascending in speed.
The last unbanded picture should be 1/60.

Faster speeds should have black bands. Slower might be the whole picture but some areas more exposed.

That is more than likely useless idea with a Nikon F.
You might occasionally get a vague bar, but just as
likely get none.

I recently scored a classic Nikon F, chrome, leather insert on prism. In good cosmetic condition, considering its age - a few scuffs, two little dents on the prism housing. The shutter sounds good. A little dirt in the viewfinder.

But...the speed markings on the shutter speed dial have worn/flaked off. Since the dial has no stop positions this makes shooting difficult. Any suggestions for a fix?

Many thanks in advance!

I always hesitate to divulge this secret, but for classic and vintage cameras, check out www.shopgoodwill.com. Nikon FTn's, FE's FG's, FM's, Nikkormats, loads of nikon lenses. Canon AE1's. Frequently there are Speed and Crown Graphics and occasionally DSLR's. I bought nearly all my Tamron, Sigma, Minolta lenses for my Sony alpha from Goodwill.

Many thanks for all the helpful posts! I've decided to have a CLA done, to include replacement/refinishing (whatever!) of the shutter speed dial. I've found a shop which can do the job at a reasonable price; the owner is certain he has a replacement dial in his stock of surplus parts. I'd guess that when the CLA is done that old warrior will probably outlast me!
