Perhaps I’m missing the problem. If the shutter works find the Bulb setting by shooting around the dial. Once you establish that position move it one position at a time and mark the dial for each speed.

You missed this part of the OP's first post "Since the dial has no stop positions this makes shooting difficult"

Thanks, Jerry. Good that the dials are available, but then to install.....

Ah, yes.

You might find something here.

You could also buy some paint and a small paintbrush. What's the worst that could happen? You have to wipe the paint off.

Thanks, Jerry. After carefully reading/watching the link, and laying in a stock of tranks, I MAY attempt the repair myself. At least the dial is available.

There are camera parts sellers on eBay. Just search for Nikon F shutter speed dial and see if any are available.

I didn't see a section for repairs, so feel free to move this to a more appropriate section.

I recently scored a classic Nikon F, chrome, leather insert on prism. In good cosmetic condition, considering its age - a few scuffs, two little dents on the prism housing. The shutter sounds good. A little dirt in the viewfinder.

But...the speed markings on the shutter speed dial have worn/flaked off. Since the dial has no stop positions this makes shooting difficult. Any suggestions for a fix? Other than the meter prism! I'd like to keep the cost down, of course!

Many thanks in advance!

The shutter dial on my Nikon F has click stops. My Photomic metering prism doesn't and relies on the dial on the camera to stop at a given shutter speed. If what you say is true, there is something wrong with the camera.

Actually a photomic viewfinder isn't expensive. It's your plain prism is more expensive.

That's what I was thinking. The dial on the meter housing connects mechanically to the camera's dial, so there should be click-stops when the meter is mounted on the camera. If the camera dial turns smoothly, there's a problem.

Just did a search for shutter speed dial Nikon F

Here's today's search link for that part.

Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!

You may have bigger problems. Your shutter speed dial should have detents.

The shutter speed dial DOES have detents! It does NOT, however, have a stop at the end of its travel, that is to say, you can go directly from T to 1/1000 without having to walk through the shutter speeds, as is the case in most shutter speeds dials. Apparently I didn't explain the situation clearly.

This photo shows what the layout should look like. Someone with a very steady hand and a jeweler's magnifying eyepiece may be able to recreate those numbers on your current dial with an extra fine point paint pen (dickblick.com) or an electric engraving tool. https://www.harborfreight.com/search?q=electric%20engraving%20tool

As another poster said, there must be plenty of Nikon Fs available for parts. You might be able to replace the whole knob or just the disk with the shutter speed labels. Good luck! >Alan

My F doesn’t have a hard stop at T. One click counter-clockwise and you’re at 1/1000 second.
