I never get tired of watching the Great Blue Herons catch fish, and it is especially good when it all comes together and I'm able to get some decent photos. These were taken at our local park pond, early Sunday morning, before most of the human fishermen had arrived.

Herons either spear or pinch like chopsticks, or sometimes a combination. This catch was a pure "chopsticks" day.

And after a bit of maneuvering in its bill...

Well done Marshall! I'm guessing the GBH would say the reason fish are kind of slimy is that it "helps them slide right on down". That is a big strong fish and a great indication of the strength of a GBH's chop sticks.

I think this is the biggest fish I've seen one catch purely chopstick style.

Sometimes, when they are wrasslin' a big one and have taken it out on the bank, they'll stop in the middle of the action to go get some more water and help things along.

Yes I have seen them dip birds and rodents in water several times to aid in getting them down. I have been enjoying your posts, welcome to my buddy list!

Beautiful photos. When I was in Costa Rica last year on a boat in the jungle, I captured an image of what I was told is a Giant Blue Heron. If anyone knows why he is blue, kindly tell me. His shoulders were I estimated to be a bit less than a meter tall. Color is often related to a birds diet.
Thanks.

Google Little Blue Heron and see if that is your bird. I've never personally seen one, but I know they are down south from KY.

Thanks, but this isn’t the little one. He was a very big fellow. Notice that even his beak is blue. Googling Giant Blue Heron in Costa Rica brought up some images with one looking similar to the one I shot (photographically). Some diet thing or genetic anomaly is causing to total blue. A strange yellow cardinal has been spotted in TN, GA and AL. It is known that the genetic anomaly is likely 1 in 10 million they say (wonder how this was figured out). Just wish the boat would have stopped for a bit so that I could have taken more than the two shots I made.
