I never get tired of watching the Great Blue Herons catch fish, and it is especially good when it all comes together and I'm able to get some decent photos. These were taken at our local park pond, early Sunday morning, before most of the human fishermen had arrived.

Herons either spear or pinch like chopsticks, or sometimes a combination. This catch was a pure "chopsticks" day.

And after a bit of maneuvering in its bill...

...down the hatch it went, with no trouble whatsoever.

Wonderful captures. Is the fish still alive while going down?

Good question, I've of wondered the same thing.

Went back and checked times, and it was 20 seconds from the initial strike to down the hatch, so it probably was still alive. I've seen them take a catch to the bank, drop it, and make a kill stab before swallowing it, but not this time.
