Want to upgrade to 1" sensor point-n-shoot

I insisted the P&S camera I get be pocketable (if only jacket or pants pocket), have at least a 1" sensor, a fair zoom range and have a viewfinder. I chose the Panasonic Lumix ZS100, the 200 came out shortly after. I am delighted with the camera. While it can't match the capabilities of my DSLR, it is handy and takes very good photos. It does much better than my smart phone camera.

Since the best camera is the one with you, it is more likely to be my "best" more often, I carry it in my car all the time. It fits a small compartment in the dash.

So these cameras are made in China?

"Panasonic’s cameras are designed in Japan, and many are manufactured by Panasonic in their factories in China."

Once God made the earth he made everything else from his factory in China.

PHRubin what you have just said, my exact thoughts, but with different words.
Be careful you do not cook your camera in the glove compartment.

Best bang for the buck right at this moment is the Lumix FZ1000.

Not exactly a point & shoot.

i'm really happy with my sony rx100 m3 even though it only has a 24 - 70 zoom range the M6 model has a 24-200 zoom but is above your price point.

Not sure where you found the part about a 90 day warranty - the official warranty from Panasonic - through authorized dealers is one year. My guess is that wherever you saw this it was either a used camera, or perhaps a refurb that someone was trying to pass off as new (there are a lot of scam artists out there) or perhaps gray market.

There is currently an "instant rebate" on the Lumix camera - reducing the price to just shy of $500 - so it would fit within budget.

Thanks for your reply. If you re-read my comment i said i would be happy with a refurb and continued to say ... quote "I was just surprised to see Panasonic refurbished cameras only carry a 90 day warranty whereas Canon gives a full year."

I probably have narrowed my choice down to the Panasonic Lumix ZS100 and the Canon G7X Mark II. Does anyone have comparison comments between these two. I have looked at the specifications and realize the Lumix has much greater zoom. More concerned about the build quality and image quality, I guess.

The deal breaker for me would be that the Canon has no viewfinder. Most other specs on the Panasonic seem to be better as well.

In addition to my Canon 70D DSLR I have several point-n-shoot cameras including Canon SX50, G15 and Lumix ZS50. I want to upgrade to a 1" sensor under $600 and would be totally happy with a refurbished camera. I was just surprised to see Panasonic refurbished cameras only carry a 90 day warranty whereas Canon gives a full year.

I have several cameras too. I just bought a Canon 5D mark 1 (Classic) which has a wide frame sensor and it was giving me trouble. I couldn't get the colors and brightness that my cropped lens Canon Rebel T1i could. I said to myself, "Now I have a full sized camera and find that it is not as good as a cropped camera!" So I started fooling around with the controls such as the compensation adjustment, the white balance, the "K" factor and the other settings and guess what, at last I got it to work beautifully or as beautifully as my smaller T1i! I would not be surprized that a lot of cameras are sold because of not bringing the camera up to par. What thinks thou?

Sorry if this has upset you. Go to Adorama or B&H and you notice the FZ1000 is listed under Point and Shoot. I'm no expert so I will go with their choices.

I don't think rcarol was upset when she said the FZ1000 was not exactly a point-n-shoot. I do see the FZ1000 is listed as a point-n-shoot on various websites, but it is not compact and appears to be more of a Bridge Camera with it's bulk. More like a Canon SX50 or SX60. I think many folks consider the point-n-shoot model to be a camera that can be pocketed and grabbed out conveniently for a quick shot.

I'm anything but upset. I happen to own both the ZS-100 and the FZ-1000. While the ZS-100 is pocketable, the FZ-1000 certainly is not since it is a bridge camera regardless of how Adorama and B&H have it listed.

Canon is sort of unusual in the industry. To the best of my knowledge, they are the only manufacturer to offer a one-year warranty on their refurbished cameras. Nikon only provides a 90-day warranty unless you purchase it from Cameta. They extend the warranty of Nikon cameras to a year.

rcarol, are you happy with the image quality and build quality of the Lumix ZS100 camera?
