For quick shows I use light room. All my professional shows are with ProShow. The Gold version is inexpensive and powerful. The Pro version extends the capability. Both are very easy to use and tech support is excellent.

I would love to find a good program to create fairly sophisticated slide shows with music. That being said, I would love for it to be fairly simple to use! I am really asking for a lot, I know. Any suggestions?

If sophistication is what you yearn for, it doesn't get any more sophisticated than the ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer by Photodex. Warning: Sophistication doesn't necessarily mean simple.

ProShow Gold is the starter software and Producer is the next level. I wouldn't label them as fairly simple to navigate but if you want sophistication, you will need to spend some time to learn it. But, you will be overjoyed with the results. If interested, start with the ProShow Gold, learn its features, and practice, practice, practice. Photodex has demo and tutorials.

I will not include here the several features of ProShow Gold/Producer. You can google it and check it out. Here are 2 samples of slideshows I made for two of UHH members:

The Backyard Birds by joer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQhe7oqQof8

joer's bird photos are stunning!

Flowers Part 5, Series on "F L O W E R S" (now totaling 16 parts) by Ed (Old Hippy):

Ed's floral photography is breathtaking!

I've used LR many times to create slide shows. They are simple but effective. You can add up to 10 songs. But, you cannot control individual slides. There are a multitude of slide show programs available, do a web search, and many are free. I have a Mac and I also use FotoMagico 5. This slide show program allows for individual control of all aspects of each slide. For PC I believe a lot of people use ProShow Gold. Any program you try will have a learning curve, whether it is easy or not for you is a question only you can answer. Each of us has differing abilities when it comes to software. I have included a web link and a web screen shot.

Years ago Microsoft Windows had a nice free slide show making software called PhotoStory. It was easy to use and a free download. I am not sure it was upgraded to take HD format (16x9) formatting. Does anyone know any more about this software and what happened to it?

I use Corel video studio. You can edit the music to fit your slide show perfectly. You are actually creating a video file in the format you choose. It's a great program for the price.

I've used PowerPoint on a number of jobs and they all came out great. Slides, sound, videos, transitions and timing all good.

This is the opinion of a former multi-image producer who used 2 to 15 slide projectors to tell stories at sales meetings, workshops, and training events.

iMovie, oddly enough, is my first pick on the Mac.

Mac or Windows, any video editor that can import stills and do the “Ken Burns” pan and zoom effects, set precise timing, add titles and effects, include video clips, edit audio, add audio tracks, and adjust sound and picture quality... is a great choice.

I can usually tell when a show is done with one of the ProShow tools. People tend to over-use effects at the expense of storytelling. If you use ProShow, please exercise restraint. Don’t let the medium get in the way of the message.

as usual this is the best answer, iMovie is a great one and for sure the best around.

I've used Lightroom, Power Point and other apps, and none offer the short learning curve, ease of use and built in palette of transitions that Pro Show Producer.

I did this within 30 minutes of starting the package for the first time:

I use a free download...Photo Story 3 for Windows. It allows for control of transitions, music, Ken Burns effect, etc.

Do any of the programs recommended here allow you to export the finished show (music included) as a QuickTime movie you can burn onto a CD?

If you create a slideshow or video program using ProShow Gold or Producer, you can also make copy of the finished show into a regular DVD, Blu ray (for sure with Producer), and thumb drive drive (USB). In addition, you can upload direct to other social media such as YouTube and Facebook. If you have Vimeo, you can upload it there, as well.
