Dualit toaster the best there is ,maybe because it’s British. You can buy replacement parts and fix it yourself.

Best I've ever used but not cheap. Very chunky and old fashioned with clockwork timers, maybe that's why it worked.

Often wondered why we can put a rover on an asteroid and can't make a decent toaster! Maybe it's one of those things you just have to watch under the grill, and flip when necessary.

I've found that the expensive toasters don't toast any better than the cheap ones. Save your money and and get a Procter Silex or a Sunbeam. Price is no longer an indication of quality. Been there, done that and gave up on the pursuit.

I’ve been buying toasters for fifty-five years, and I have yet to find one that meets your criteria--best of luck to you.

Wish the bulk of my life problems were as mundane as a toaster.

You wanna compare problems? Since October, we've have had a car that wouldn't pass inspection after spending $700 on "repairs," a car that was totaled, a well pump that broke - leaving us without water for ten days, three sick dogs with huge vet bills, then the stove broke. When it rains, it pours.

I ordered a nice smooth-top GE stove from Lowe's yesterday, and it will be delivered on Sunday. In the meantime, we have microwave dinners, take-out pizza, and take-out Chinese.

I like the look of that Breville toaster oven. I see one of them in my future.

After reading the story about Dualit toasters I was amazed. It's not made in the land of sH#t quality, China.
For that reason alone I'm going to buy one. Plus some of the positive comments here on UHH.

Some of the ones available on Amazons site are not that expensive.

Now, if Dualit can develop a quality French Press I'll buy that also...Oops, I know the British would never go that route, too controversial. Forget I said that.

The biggest problems with toaster are Bagels and Buns. When I was younger the toaster only did normal sliced bread. Now it to be wide enough to get them bagels inside, that places the element further away from the bread's surface, now it takes a lot longer to toast it. I remember the day we had the toaster that only did one side and you had to take it out a flip it over to do the other side, even they were faster than what we have now.

Damn Bagels and Buns!

What's a good toaster? In the past 5 years, I've been through a mid-priced Cuisinart & KitchenAid, I even tried a cheapie Proctor Silex and finally a Black & Decker Toaster-Oven. Each was either slow as hell or didn't toast one side the same as the other. I'd prefer a 4-slice but it's not critical. However, it has to be at least a little faster than any of mine (5 minutes for a single slice on some) and has to brown both sides evenly. Is this so hard to accomplish? I swear, we've been making windshield wipers and toasters for 125 years and we still don't seem able to make a version of either that works well...or very long.

"I figured I'd ask a similar, if more mundane, question." I don't think it's more mundane.
That sums it up. Good luck.

If you use the technique that a friend of mine uses, then any toaster works...

Put the toaster on its highest setting. When the kitchen smoke alarm triggers, remove toast and scrape off the ash until you get the level of browning that you like.

Well, actually not. Do you remember in the '40s we had a saying, "better than sliced bread?" That is because the automatic bread-slicer was only invented in the early '30s.

How quickly we get used to technology!

I must agree with Allan Catt that the best here in the UK is a "Dualit Toaster". I do not know if they are available in the US.

We have been using the T-FAL Avanie for some 10 years. It has a broad range of darkness settings, a bagel button that shuts off the electric elements on one side of each slot. It is a two-slotter.
