After reading the extensive responses to Jerry's quest for a new stove, I figured I'd ask a similar, if more mundane, question.
What's a good toaster? In the past 5 years, I've been through a mid-priced Cuisinart & KitchenAid, I even tried a cheapie Proctor Silex and finally a Black & Decker Toaster-Oven. Each was either slow as hell or didn't toast one side the same as the other. I'd prefer a 4-slice but it's not critical. However, it has to be at least a little faster than any of mine (5 minutes for a single slice on some) and has to brown both sides evenly. Is this so hard to accomplish? I swear, we've been making windshield wipers and toasters for 125 years and we still don't seem able to make a version of either that works well...or very long.

....Good luck on THIS quest!! I will be following this thread like a HAWK!!
~ My wife and I have gone through a similar toaster trip. The last, a Black and Decker, I bought for the Bagel setting. Supposedly on the Bagel setting, it's supposed to toast one side LESS than the other side. I think it worked maybe twice and now toasts bagels and hamburger buns the same on both sides. Plus regular bread toasting is a crap shoot as to evenness and how much they actually get toasted. Always different at the SAME dial setting!!! Aarrrrgggg!!!!!!
Frustration is a THING!!

Cuisinart 420 has good reviews. About $60.
Wish the bulk of my life problems were as mundane as a toaster.

There's nothing mundane about a toaster that doesn't work.
It affects the quality of your entire day.

Toaster science seems to have taken a step forward into the unreliable zone. I was going to say a step backward, but then realized I haven't had one I really liked until the last buy. We now have a Krups 2 slice that works pretty well, but like others went through 3 different brands of unhappiness, did similar with coffee makers till settling on our current Mr.Coffee Stainless Steel carafe model, like it too. We didn't go down the Pod path, never tasted a good cup from those, not anywhere close to our fresh ground fresh brewed happiness.
I have both a Black & Decker and a Cuisinart and they both work fine. and I use a toaster quite often. The Cuisinart is faster. Toasts bread at medium in 2.5 minutes......model CPT122. What you have to understand though is this stuff is made in CHINA!!!!

I have a Breville Toaster Oven that is terrific. It is not cheap. They also make toasters. Probably available on Amazon.

I guess I am lucky. My Sunbeam toaster is 11 years old and works the same today as 11 years ago. Maybe they don't make them as well anymore. Probably bust on April 1.

Do you have one? It does not have a lever. What if you need to pop something out further than the motorized lift brings the toasted item up? Also, what about cleaning. How easy is it to clean all those little crumbs from the inside?
I noticed that the 415 does have a lever and is a little less expensive.
I just make toast under the broiler, so I've never had a toaster. But I trust the Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen, so I looked up their toaster tests. They tested the latest thing in toasters - the long slot toaster. You can toast two slices in the long slot. They recommended two for less than $100. First was the Breville The Bit More Toaster at $80, which has two slots so can toast 4 slices. The other is the Dash Clear View Toaster, at $36, but only one slot. It has a clear window so you can see the toasting progress. Both are available on Amazon.

I checked on this review also. The Dash Clear View has the added advantage of periodically throwing the toast on the counter or the floor. That could be entertaining.

Dualit toaster the best there is ,maybe because it’s British. You can buy replacement parts and fix it yourself.
