Our solution was to stop eating toast (and bred in general) Not only are our waistlines much thinner, but we dosn't have to fiddle finding a toaster that works.
Freudian slip:a That shoud read BREAD
My sister bought the Breville toaster for my parents, after they died it came to me. It is now some 15 plus years old and works all the time perfectly. Dial in on the digital display the number and it works repeatedly, perfectly each time. It will toast two sliced bagels at a time. Bread takes from 30 seconds to 45 seconds depending on thickness.
Looks like $100.

I am still using my mother's 1947 Sunbeam which was a wedding present. Bread even goes down automatically. Stainless steel finish still looks pretty good.

My family's first toaster was the kind with a single central heating element where you opened the two side panels to put in toast. It only toasted one side of the bread, but the shape of the panels was designed so that when you opened them a second time the bread would slide down such that the untoasted side of the bread would now be exposed to the element. No slot, no pop-up mechanism, no timer, not even a power switch (had to remember to unplug the toaster when finished). Whoah, am I really that old?

Dualit toaster the best there is, maybe because it’s British. You can buy replacement parts and fix it yourself.
I second the Dualit brand...great quality and results. Excellent toasters, albeit somewhat more expensive than the USA brands. I think that the only way to order is online...you likely won't find them in local stores.
