Do we need a separate post-processing section?

Many topics posted to Post Processing Forum could easily fit into:
1. Main forum Discussion
2. Photo Gallery
3. For Your Consideration

The overwhelming majority of UHH users hang out in main discussion or photo gallery. The challenge for PP Forum, as with all the volunteer-managed sections, is they are invisible unless the UHH user specifically subscribes. How many of you reading this topic know there are about 30 specialty sections moderated by volunteers??

A bit of PP Forum's history can be found here. As noted in that doc, from June 1 through December 31, 2018, PP Forum averaged only 16 topics per month. Main discussion sees that many in a single day and photo gallery can have that many in a few hours

So, what is the value of PP Forum? I see it as the perfect place to post tutorials and editing challenges. We have a good number of tutorials, including expanded discussion within topics, since I took over as moderator - but we would definitely enjoy more challenges from pp experts willing to take the time to advise and offer feedback on participants' work (similar to what Shakey did).

For those just learning of this section - and for those veterans willing to come onboard with new topics - please be sure to read the updated guidelines here and my notice here, including expanded conversation on page 2.

Thanks for your time - - and don't forget to subscribe! 🤗

If people would use it, yes, we benefit from a post processing section.

There are nearly 3,000 people subscribed, but I suspect that many of those are no longer active on UHH. And there is the continuing challenge of "getting the word out" to new folks. Thanks Paul!

I try to nudge when I can (a typical comment for images posted in the Main Discussion area .... ):

You might consider other dedicated sections like Post Processing or the Photo Gallery for this and similar posts ....

I usually scan the main photography section skipping many of the posts since I no longer own a Nikon or Canon. The PP section is the next one and my favorite. Then comes a half dozen other specialty sections an finally the gallery. I enjoy the PP section and still have some topics I will eventually bring up there.

For post processing, I usually end up at www.retouchpro.com. I find many members there are really high end retouchers, and their tutorials are top shelf. Just sayin' Linda.

Sounds like you figured out how to get the most from UHH early on, Guyserman. I'm still astounded at the number of folks who don't realize the site is open 24/7 and the world doesn't end if their digest doesn't arrive on time

Your participation in PP Forum is much appreciated!

I actually look there everyday. Post processing is a very important part of my photography, but I don't post there much because most of the threads don't hold a lot of interest for me.

Probably like many/most here been awhile since I looked at all the categories, originally subscribing to those of interest and never really looking back. So your post made me re-aware of the section, realization you are one of the moderators made me subscribe. <grin> Posting a shorter version of your msg in 3-4 other related areas may also help draw attention, especially to us "newer" members. Thanks for the reminder.

And, PS as a separate topic, read the rules of the area and what a forum we would have here if all followed them in all sectors.

You are quite Linda. Most topics in Post Processing is not about processing at all, but I am still a subscriber as I hope that there will be something that I will gain from that section. It is difficult to keep members to the topics that the section is meant to represent. A Post Processing Section is helpful for the Novices like me.

I might scan through the Main Photographic Section but I treat it as chit chat and don't linger often.

A year or two back there were more professional photographers that use to help out on the "For Your Consideration" Section but most of them seem to have disappeared. I have learned a lot from that section.

Good luck Linda.

Heather

I've dabbled on four other sites, 3 small ones and fredmiranda. For some reason I always come back to UHH. I fear I imprinted on these mustard yellow pages early in my digital development (this was also my first online forum of any kind).

To your point, of course there are many sites with more professionals than we find on UHH. I've always been curious how the forum evolved its first year and what the "plank owners" expected. And why is it so many really old people hang out here?? 😄

Well I do find it a useful place to get critique and comment on my composites, and am grateful that’s it’s here. I’m no pro, and I’m not looking to be one, so the opinion of my peers is ample for me and I’d recommend the section to anyone of similar ilk or who is starting out on the pp and/or compositing route. We can help one another and, sure, that includes pointers to where good tutorials may be found but, unlike Gene, I’d hope to do my growing here on UHH. The section would benefit from more members undoubtedly but I’m happy to hang-in whilst it grows. Your own efforts in regenerating the section are commendable and I hope they bear fruit Linda.
