What exactly does the Nix collection allow me to do that I can’t in LR/PS? They are offering it at $59.00. It’s not the money so is it worth having.

Nik is cool and it set itself apart from other editors a long time ago. Google bought it and made it available for free. DxO purchased the license and is continuing to develop the application. It is different than other applications and I would suggest that you research Nik on Youtube. I used it before Google and I am glad DxO bought the license and is continuing to develop it.

Are there any differences between the versions from Google and DxO?

Right now, minimal. This article says "major" but the issues with compatibility and such many of us never experienced previously.

Does the updated Collection work on a 4K monitor. With the previous free version from DXO the dialogs are too small to see.

I sometimes use the free original Nik Collection (for B&W) , but I more often use Topaz Suite components with Ps.

Indeed it does

Here is another link:

There are 55 filters in the Color Efex section alone. This link has each one separately covered in very short, well produced videos for a quick taste. Each pre-set can be extensively personalized and the set includes many handy "straight" editing tools along with the creative ones.

The black and white conversion module, Silver Efex, has a great number of features and controls.

I have used the Detail filter in Nik for some time & recently tried Define to clear up some noise. However, Linda graciously shared that link with me the other day & I realized there is a wealth of capability in the suite that I had never realized. So I suggest it's worth looking at the videos. The light started to come on for me half way through the 1st one.

In theory, anything the Nik collection can do can be replicated with your editor alone, assuming your editing skills are advanced enough.

I was one of the first purchasers back in the beginning. I paid &500.00 for the suite at the Javits center photo expo and that was a discounted price. Google had it for a time and issued it for free bud did no updates to the software. They than sold it to DXO and I believe they only did comparability updates for it. However it’s still a great program and at $59.00 a great bargain in my opinion. The b&w module alone is worth it. I don’t think you will be disappointed in this program.

I often use the Nik HDR filter when a photo looks very dull. Especially if there are clouds involved. Also like the black and white module. Here is a before and after.

So is this collection only for Adobe products plugins, or can it be used standalone or with other editors?

If I own and use the free version previously published by Google, do I need to update to the DXO version to continue using it? My platform is Mac.

The old version will continue to work but will not be updated. The DXO version will be updated. If the $59 is not a factor I propose you should buy the new version just to support the company that stepped up to save what is a nice little collection of tools. Most everyone I know uses pieces of it, not on every photo, but on those that you need it it gets the job done.
