good idea! the chances of both cards dying are slim and I really didnt want to use that $#% cable...Ed

One reason not to use the cable is that in my experience, mini/micro USB connectors can be pretty fragile, and if you break it, it requires a main board replacement which is $$$. The spec on them is for 5000 insertions, but I have had one break on a quality piece of equipment after roughly 300-400 insertions. No way to determine how robust the one on your camera is, but I am gun shy after having to toss that piece of gear, because it wasn’t cost effective to change the board. In fairness, I have bent a CF pin (which cost $200+ to replace the pin assembly) some years ago, so I am very careful inserting CF cards now. In fact, if I’m not in a big hurry, I avoid both issues and use the Wi_Fi for download.

Never had one break and would likely be a matter of gripping the broken end and simply pulling it out.

WiFi is good... but slow.

Not referring to the male (plug) breaking off in the socket, referring to the actual socket, which is soldered to the main board, cracking and becoming unusable. The Wi_Fi is slow. I haven’t benchmarked, but I’d guess 50 Mb/sec - maybe 5 sec per 30 MB raw shot, but could be worse.

Correct, not worried about the cable plug. USB sockets are just fragile enough to where you need to exercise care when plugging in or out. I only use mine for tethering either direct to the laptop or CamRanger. Same care goes into plugging in CF cards in camera or reader.

Never had a failure of a socket from the main board. It would be a real problem, though.

If they <still> review in the camera, can you use a cable from the camera to the computer?

The poster stated that they could not be viewed in the camera.

One reason not to use the cable is that in my expe... (show quote)

It is so easy to bend CF card pins. I solved the problem by getting an adapter. The CF card stays in and a standard SD card slips into a slot on the CF card.

Even with dual card sockets, I'd still use a USB cable.

Off topic, but to your point - computers in the early days of electronic fuel injection were sensitive to RFI as well. A buddy of mine who was also a ham could make my neighbors Volvo 264 refuse to start by keying his 2M rig in his car nearby (25W). The guy thought it was black magic. My friend would stand next to his car with the mic surreptitiously held in his hand and “command” the car not to start, and of course it wouldn’t until he unkeyed the mic.

yeh, Subru had RFI problems years ago, cars would stall in traffic from RFI. One of its solutions was to shiels its (radio,i guess) ANTENNA.. I crossed off SBU after that one..

Funny but I solved that problem too. I use ONLY XQD cards! Much better design. Best of luck.

UPDATE: unable to recover photos w/ recovery utilities and expert help. Having lost the shoot and spent money on recovery software, Lexar offers me a $29.95 refund if i jump through their hoops, sign an affidavit, send them photos of the card, swear to destroy their damned card and waste more time. I'll go on record: to Hell with Lexar and their garbage self-destroying product!

Sorry you're still having trouble, but I'll still be buying Lexar as they have not failed me to date (fingers crossed). I've used ONLY Lexar Professional cards, not the cheaper versions, including many many CF cards and now @ 10 XQD cards. Very limited use of SD cards and their derivatives as I do consider that format risky. Hope you have better luck in the future.

Sorry for the late reply, but there are photo recovery services available, (for damaged cards/unreadable cards). Most can be recovered, if you have NOT written over the files, and not a micro card that is physically broken. Something like 96% chance of recovery. You can locate these with a google search. You can also take to a local photography shop and they can usually point you in the direction of where you can send them for recovery!
