Thanks. I did check it out. Looks really interesting and it is on our route through the Rockies. I'll definitely put it in our plans. That mill is supposed to be one of the most photographed scenes in Colorado!

If you plan to go to the mill, make a reservation with a driver and his jeep now. You don't want to use yours. Big boulders on the precarious road--one way road with steep drop offs. I rented a jeep and a driver last year and we had a wonderful time!

Ashcroft is near there too. A deserted ghost town with at least 10 buildings on-site. I have attached a couple of photos from my trip last year. Enjoy!

Colorado Springs. The air force academy and the garden of the gods, pikes peak and lots of other places in the area.

Garden of the Gods is great. Doesn’t take long to cover it and is a pretty easy walk. Early morning and late day lighting is the best. Red Rocks just West of Denver is also full of photo opportunities.

We are driving to Colorado this time, in a couple weeks, to take advantage of our Jeep Liberty 4x4. Out to west Texas, north through New Mexico to Denver, then west to Idaho Springs area for a family reunion. Plan after that is to head south from Glenwood Springs to Aspen, check out the Maroon Belles, then south around to Crested Butte, Gunnison, Black Canyon NP and whatever else we have time to explore. I just got the Colorado Roadside Photography Guide book and I'm reading it now.
My question is this - I've never been south of Glenwood Springs before. What should look for other than what I've mentioned? Any hidden gems. I'm also a geologist and rockhound, as is my wife.
I'll have my D7000, an 18-270 zoom, a 105 macro, a 10-24 wideangle I'm renting, an SB900 equivalent flash and my Manfrotto tripod and ball head. I have and use Cokin split ND filters and polarizers.

Telluride, Co (ToHellYouRide) BACK ROADS, Switch backs up to Bridal Vail Falls. Although it's not like it was back in the early 70's when I would spend the summers camped just outside of town. Scenery hasn't changed like the town has.

Can I navigate those back roads in an All wheel drive Subaru Outback?

Fstop--Planning a similar trip and I also have a Subaru outback so lets hope some one can answer the question. Looks to me YES.

Any Colorado travelers visit the Toll Gate Saloon in Central City? I've been to some wild places but that's got to be in the top 5. Labor Day fundraiser for Jerry's Kids. 1981. Very nice young ladies auctioning their tops off to raise money. No cameras allowed.

I don't envy you spending two days driving out of the state in a Jeep and then after the fun is over two more days driving back across Texas to get home.

Ahhhh, the "beauty" of west Texas, miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles. How can those lakes, trees, and mountains ever compare? :-D

If it were possible I would move everything from ND South to Texas somewhere else and compact the country to make it quicker to get to Colorado. Kind of a cut and paste. Guess I could paste it in the Northeast. They need a little Midwest common sense and values up there. OOP's there I go again starting trouble.

As I have mentioned in my post - I have had the good fortune to have lived all over the western states mostly in the mountain mining towns 'till I turned 18 the settled down in No. CA but still kept the CO, ID & MT in my mind - been back to visit many times - this is the reason I am retired here in the Sierra Nevada Mnts of No. CA not quite CO but sure close.

Harvey= Please don't post shots like above. I want to see these places and I can't so you are making me weep. Really beautiful pictures. What did you use to make these shots almost come alive.

Seems like everyone covered all the best of the areas..Just heads up for Maroon bells...Get there around 5am to lock in your place..very popular and best light is Sunrise.
Independence Pass is a site to see..and drive. If you go up 285 from NM to Colorful Colorado Gunnison area..or go 550 to Durango,Silverton,Ouray. Give yourself lots of time..you will be pulling over often.
