Hello folks.question I have many really
cool photos taken while I was a sniper with seal team(in Iraq-Iran-Kuwait-Syria-
chad and Somalia). They were stolen during a breakin. Two years later got them
back. I have to restore them as they are irreplaceable.Do you know a good program for restoring photos. If not a reasonable place that does restoring.(need kind of cheap as I have about 400 photos.
Thanks in advance

There are steps you can take in photoshop that could bring them back after scanning them, but it'll take a decent working knowledge of the program to do them well. I can't think of a particular program that's designed for that sole purpose. And thanks for your service, my hat off to you sailor!!

Like everything else, it depends. How much restoration is needed?

I'm guessing there are some really cool photos. We have a place here in Utah not too far south of me that does a great job but, while their pricing is quite reasonable, I suspect it would cost you a bit to get all of your pics restored. If you end up not finding a do-it-yourself solution or a local place that has reasonable charges, drop me a message and I will put you in touch. At some point I am hoping you will post some of your pics (I was going to use the word 'shots' but wanted to avoid the double entendre. Good luck.

Thanks for your service. Check COSTCO. They do it and I am sorry I do not know what they charge. Possibly a military discount?

thank you for your service, sir..... try to keep a hands on approach. i know someone who got a private trip on a boat while they were building the aswan dam. she had 32, 36 pic rolls of film and the one with the dam is the only one that she did not get back from processing... just a thought if they might be "sensitive"

You don't need a program to do restorations, you need a skilled retoucher. I would hang around this site:

https://www.retouchpro.com/

There are some incredibly talented people there. I am sure you can find someone to help you out.

Someone who can do something like this:

Hello friend, I am glad you recover your photos. Unfortunately 400 photos can be very expensive to restore by a service, your best bet will be to use photoshop. Since you need to scan each image first and then do the restoration, I think that you should learn how to use Photoshop. You can purchase a copy of photoshop in eBay.com CS5 or CS6 can be used for the restoration. If you don't want to purchase the program, you can sign up to www.adobe.com and for $10.00 a month you can use the program. If you do decide to learn how to use the program and just do it yourself, here is a link to a bunch of videos about photo restoration in youtube. Good luck. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=How+to+restore+photos+in+photoshop+easy

What exactly do you mean by "restoring?" Getting rid of blemishes/scratches? Color correction? The Photos application in Windows 10 is free and can do much of this work without any hassle. Read this other thread through and see how I removed many scratches and defects from a negative I just scanned.

Photoshop. Probably the Healing Brush will do most of the work. Good luck.

I've done restoration from time to time. One of my efforts was published in a book on restoration and retouching. I use Photoshop to do any photo work, including retouching and restoration.
Depending on the amount of, and kind of, mess a photo is in, the time can be an hour to several weeks.

It would help a lot if you would post a couple of representative examples here so we could better judge what needs to be done. It sounds like they would need to be scanned on a good scanner and then retouched. This would be fairly expensive. I would pick out the photos you like the most and have the least amount of damage and have those done. If you were in my area I could do a number of them and maybe teach you enough Photoshop so you could do the rest.

You'll need a photo processing program and a way to digitize the photos. The Epson Perfection V600 is a good scanner that will come in handy for lots of things. As for processing, there are many choices.
