Oregon has no sales tax! (Yet!) I refuse to buy from vendors that still charge me tax!

If you have no use and sales tax in your state the vendor will not collect a tax on your purchase. The vendor is not charging a tax just collecting on behalf of a state.

Quite right. We have put our brownstone in a trust and are in the process of declaring New Hampshire as our permanent residence. No sales or income tax. A little different than NYC.
This Christmas we received a lot of packages addressed to us from friends who bought stuff and had it delivered to our address. We then reshipped those packages back to the city.

I remember when that SCOTUS decision came down, that all States would be subjected to paying online sales tax. It has always been required for many years, because the State of California, trusted you to put your sales tax on your State Income Tax Form. Many did not put any, or just some, of what they owed California in sales tax. When I browsed the B&H website just a few days ago, I was shocked, that at the bottom of the ad, that it said zero sales tax for California. So, it looks like California got a grace period on paying sales tax from B&H orders. I ordered several items online from NYC this past Christmas, and two of them charged me sales tax. So, the honeymoon is over. Sales tax in California is determined by your zip code. I envy the few States, that have no sales tax. California is not one of them. Unfortunately. Governor Brown loved taxing Californians. And so does our new Governor, Gavin Newsom. He will exceed his predecessor in taxing. Anything and Everything. But, we do benefit from taxes too. So, it's not all bad. I love my parks, library, and anything public, that I don't have to pay admissions to.

I hope that in the long run, collecting sales tax from out-of-state vendors will help retain the few remaining local camera shops. Perhaps a bold few will even open new ones???

Regrettably, it will take more than the collected tax dollars to sustain a business.

I agree, but every little bit helps.

Prices were the same but the tax made a huge difference.
PA has always asked on tax forms about unpaid sales taxes and required them to be paid.

That’s only bad news for freeloaders.

So I assume instead of paying the rate required by law on your income taxes you go ahead and bump it up to the maximum rate. I say this only because you are calling someone who pays only what is required by law a freeloader.

Living in California, you have always been required to pay use tax on out of state purchases on your state income tax. It's just that enforcement is very difficult. So you are just a scofflaw who will have to pay the tax now that the out of state merchants have been required to collect it.

Not just you. There is actually a company producing software that makes it easy for the online companies to charge the tax. I am sure that in a short while all states will do this.

It’s the federal law now for all interstate sales.

I heard it was so cold in Washington last week that politicians could be seen with their hands in their OWN pockets!

Call me Rumplestiltskin! I must have slept through the passing of a Federal Sales tax.
