The wife and I are going to the big flower show in Philadelphia and I can't decide which camera to take. The wife will be using my Canon SL2 with an EF-S 18-200 lens. I was thinking about taking my 5D IV with the 28-300L or my D7200 with Nikkor 28-300 attached or my M50 with the 28-300L attached. I used the 5D IV / 28-300L last year but, even though I got excellent photos, that camera lens combo is quite heavy. I'm leaning towards the D7200 because it's really good in lower light conditions and it's smaller and lighter and has higher resolution than the D500. I like the 28-300 because even on a crop body it's plenty wide for the flower show and the 300 end comes in quite handy. The Nikkor lens isn't as good as the Canon lens but it is good enough.

I would go with the 5d IV for resolution but echo the idea of a macro lens instead of the zooms. Your wife will have a zoom for when it is needed. Unless you are competing with your wife for pictures. Actually given the likely outcome, based on years of experience competing with a wife, I would take completely different equipment than she and later simply admit she is superior. It is just easier.

You seem to have already eliminated the D500 and the heavy Canon. So why not pose the question with just those you are seriously considering and list the strengths and weaknesses for each in the situation you will find yourself.

You may decide a nice new Z7 is called for.

A good analyst gathers information to analyze. Which is exactly what the OP is doing here.

The OP has pointed out the plus and minus points of his list of equipment, but he still wants somebody to make a decision for him. So he is not really analysing anything.

The OP has pointed out SOME of the plus and minus points. He is seeking input incase he has missed something.

Really. If you do not see this or this post offends your delicate sensibilities and your belief that you should judge what is a proper post you have several really good options:

1) Skip the post
2) Seek therapeutic help
3) Both of the above.

I'm retired. Thank you for the thoughtful and absolutely mindlessly useless response.

If you’re going to a big flower show. Stop and think! You need macro too get close and detailed. Take tripod or mono pod small reflector disk if your are allowed. Take multiple focus areas and photo stack your images. I should look a Macro 90mm @ F 2.8 , or somewhere around the focal length take a cloth to wipe your glass take spare cards and batteries. The place will be air conditioned too cool. So batteries will deplete quicker. Condition you hardware to your location temperature. Have fun and go none stop shooting. 👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you for the tips. Tripods, monopods, reflectors are not allowed. This will be our 23rd annual trip to the flower show.
Although it is well below freezing outside, the humidity is very low and from the time we board the train some 30 miles outside Philadelphia, until we return tonight, we will be inside.

I don't know you, so this comment is unfair of me. But, since I don't know you, your post seems more like you just want everyone to know what optical toys you own, rather than actually being interested in feedback. I believe any of the equipment you bloated about will do a fine job, if you do your part.

The equipment I listed is maybe one tenth of what I actually own. My reason for posting was to gather objective opinions to aid in my decision. One thing I have gathered from this is, some of you really can't help yourselves. Probably just miserable grumpy old men with the minds of juvenile delinquents.

I do not understand how someone who does not care about the question in a post and has nothing useful to add still feels compelled to criticize.

It's kind of amazing if you think about it. There are almost daily postings about people going on vacation asking what camera or lens they should bring and the rank and file usually goes out of the way to accommodate them. To me, in many cases it looks more like a "hey look at me, we're going on holiday here or there", instead of a legitimate request for help.

You've been to this show 23 times, and still don't know what equipment works best?

I've used heavy Canon's in the past. I found the 28-300 lens works really well at a flower show, even though it's not macro. I remember last year with the 5D IV and the 28-300L, it really does get heavy after several hours of walking around and taking photos. The Z series cameras are bleeding edge technology, not interested.
I eliminated the D500 because it doesn't really produce better images than the D7200 and I don't need up to 10 fps. The flowers are quite stationary and the butterflies at the butterfly exhibit don't move very fast.
Well, have to board a train soon, I've decided to go Nikon this year; D7200 it is.

The show is exciting and constantly changing. This year, for the first time, the FTD World Cup was held at the Philadelphia Flower Show.

So, things change.

Enjoy the flowers - use your phone camera.

Although I do have a Google Pixel III and it's supposed to have a pretty good camera, I'm sure I can do better with the much bigger lens and 1.5 crop 24 mpxl Sony sensor.
