You've been here longer than I have. One thing I discovered early on, this site is inhabited by a whole lot of miserable, opinionated grumpy old men who live to annoy innocent victims with their dull minded wit. I just consider the source and gleefully accept their anger because I'm not one of them. Plus most of them haven't a clue or concept of what social media really is. I could use the ignore feature but what's the fun in that.

There's a lot of walking and possible options I didn't think of, thus the reason for asking others opinions. Unfortunately, more people took it as a opertunity to express less than useful or even necessary opinions.

D7200, you did the 5D thing last year

After seriously looking at my many body and lens options, most of which were not listed, I've decided my D7200 will be making it's first trip to the flower show. I'll take my SB-400 flash along as well. It's small, light and plenty powerful.
Time to head to the train station.

If you’re going to a big flower show. Stop and think! You need macro too get close and detailed. Take tripod or mono pod small reflector disk if your are allowed. Take multiple focus areas and photo stack your images. I should look a Macro 90mm @ F 2.8 , or somewhere around the focal length take a cloth to wipe your glass take spare cards and batteries. The place will be air conditioned too cool. So batteries will deplete quicker. Condition you hardware to your location temperature. Have fun and go none stop shooting. 👍🏻👍🏻

You do not need a macro lens to shoot flowers although there a valuable option, but that's all they are, another option. You can shoot lovely flower shots with about any lens and yes one can have nice details as well! And to Morrison, I think you "kinda" answered your own question. I do agree of you wanting to take the 7200 with the 28-300, it give you the same focal range as the Canon, but with a substantially smaller weight factor, if that is of importance to you. Go out there, have fun and enjoy all those lovely flowers and smells! (hopefully we can enjoy a few shots later on as well)!

Although I do have a Google Pixel III and it's supposed to have a pretty good camera, I'm sure I can do better with the much bigger lens and 1.5 crop 24 mpxl Sony sensor.

Fine. Show us the results when you get back. I was thinking in terms of enjoying the show instead of playing with your 'toys'.

The Canon is full frame and exceptionally larger and heavier. My two top considerations are weight and image quality. The Canon is more megapixels but will 6 more megapixels really matter if I'm not planning on a lot of cropping. I've decided, all things considered, the D7200 and Nikkor 28-300, 42-450 equivalent, should do an excellent job at the flower show.
If I get any photos I feel are worth sharing, I will definitely do so.

I'd take the SONY, as I'm sure you'll have one by then. Maybe with a Zeiss lens.

The wife and I are going to the big flower show in Philadelphia and I can't decide which camera to take. The wife will be using my Canon SL2 with an EF-S 18-200 lens. I was thinking about taking my 5D IV with the 28-300L or my D7200 with Nikkor 28-300 attached or my M50 with the 28-300L attached. I used the 5D IV / 28-300L last year but, even though I got excellent photos, that camera lens combo is quite heavy. I'm leaning towards the D7200 because it's really good in lower light conditions and it's smaller and lighter and has higher resolution than the D500. I like the 28-300 because even on a crop body it's plenty wide for the flower show and the 300 end comes in quite handy. The Nikkor lens isn't as good as the Canon lens but it is good enough.

I'm still trying to figure out why you need a 200mm or a 300mm for a flower show. You taking pictures from the parking lot?

One thing I have gathered from this is, some of you really can't help yourselves. Probably just miserable grumpy old men with the minds of juvenile delinquents.

I think that it seems someone who has purchased all that expensive equipment would have their own idea as to what equipment to take to a flower show for the 24th time. Are you trying to pull someones leg?

I've never been there. But I do take pictures of flowers at a variety of venues. I primarily use a 150 and a 180 macro lens and a full-frame camera. I also prefer to use an off-camera speedlight to have some color and quality consistency on the lighting. I also have and occasionally use an 85 mm F2.8 PC-E, but mostly because it gets me to 1:2 magnification. I prefer to shoot individual flowers rather than wide expansive views, though I will take a few of those, usually with my cellphone.

The 5DM4 is better in low light than the D7200. I agree, the 28-300L + 5D Mk4 is a bit of a beast. The 28-300 Nikkor is ok on a crop sensor. If you need to crop your images later, then I would take the 5DMk4 and maybe rent a lens that might work better for you.

You don't have any Macro Lens and so you can order the Canon D5000 Macro Lens Filter that screws into the front of your telephoto zoomer and turns it into a rather fun macro lens that can be used at various distances.......about $130.00 U.S. on the internet and it works very well and it's fast & easy to install or remove from your walk-around favorite rig. It comes in several sizes...58mm & 77mm I believe. I love mine a lot and always keep it handy in my pocket when I'm out there messing around and looking for something to shoot. A lot cheaper than purchasing a separate Macro Lens or lugging around 2 & 3 extra cameras.......right ?

I always carry a super wide-angle , a zoom telephoto up to 400mm and that add-on Macro converter in my travel bag and divide them up between a FF & a Cropper cameras to do just about anything with the extra option on placing that Macro onto the FF & lens rig if I need it for a closeup.

The only thing I lack is the 1.4 Teleconverter lens and I'll have one next year when I have the extra cash.

Good Luck at the Flower Show

Thank you for the tips. Tripods, monopods, reflectors are not allowed. This will be our 23rd annual trip to the flower show.
Although it is well below freezing outside, the humidity is very low and from the time we board the train some 30 miles outside Philadelphia, until we return tonight, we will be inside.

What?? You still haven't figured what you should use? Wow.
What position did you hold as an analyst?
