Do you really have the previous experience claimed and attend a paid siminar and come away so messed up? Something is bogus.
E-W! There you are! We wondered when you would return. Hate & discontent, as usual. By the way, proper spelling is seminar.

Nikonian72 The Hate & discontent all come from you. thanks for the spelling lesson.

Why don't you just ask the photographer what he did?

I went to a seminar way back ('60s) where this photographer was making huge prints from 35mm that were so very fine grained and detailed from Plus-X.
We surmised he used a Leica camera, but never revealed his process.

My simple test so that I could see the effect of diffraction with my own equipment (using a tripod; stabilization turned off; no filter; several different focal lengths) - in which I shot a subject at several different apertures - showed me that for the most part (little in life is 100% consistent) the "sweet spot" was around 3 stops past wide open aperture. (And by "sweet spot" I mean resolution AND CONTRAST, which also can make a subject appear sharper). Beyond that point, the subject I was focused on began to soften (and contrast lessen) even as depth of field continued to increase. Try it.

i received the nikon stuff yesterday and i am not a happy camper.
i am very disappointed.

the nikor 24-70 lens takes absolutely knock out photos at f22.

my canon 24-70 takes great photos between 5.6 and 11...but sucks at f22.

i took photos with my sigma 70-200 2.8 at f22 and got great shots.

the canon L 24-70 is a disappointment. most would say, don't shoot over f11.....and maybe that's the way it should be.

i will keep my 7d and canon 24-70 and shoot within it's limitations...but i am in the market for a full frame.

i may rent the mk2 series of the 24-70 canon before i make any decisions as far as which brand full frame i go to.

i am stuck in training on some new equipment here at work this week and next so i won't have much of a chance to respond or post photos til the holiday weekend.

thanks for all your help. you are all great.

jackinthebox is sure hateful. it doesn't bother me because people like him are equal opportunity...they hate everybody but themselves.
lots of posts and only one idiot came out.

and yes, jackinthebox, i have the experience and i know what i saw. the instructor gave me his settings. i just had to see for myself. my canon lens falls short of the nikon lens. plain and simple.

you cannot be a photographer, because you have a crap attitude.

there's nothing bogus about this thread...except for you.

besides the problem that i experienced, i learned plenty from those coming on and posting.

i am sorry for mispelling your name...i thought i read it was jackinabox......when it is really jerkinabox

jimberton, this thread has been super. I've googled & read quite a lot about lens diffraction - the D800/800e technical guide speaks to this issue - diffraction becomes noticeable above f/11 (page 13 of the guide).

hooray......

i just got a call from the instructor...as i emailed the address that i booked the seminar............he said he shoots jpg and he has custom picture control settings in his nikon that boosts, sharpen and some noise removal.

he said he would share those settings with me when i get that rental nikon d7000 in my hands. said he uses the 24-70 nikor all the time at f22 when he wants everything in the picture in focus.

he says i will see this when i get my rentals.

he has a canon 1dmk2 that he also uses but said he never had the 24-70mm2.8 L. he has the 24-105 L and shoots with that at f22 with no problems.

he said all lenses have their streghts and weakness.....he said canon lens are weak at both ends but strong in the middle.

he said it's really hard to compare the nikor 24-70 2.8 with canon, sony, or whatever brand, because this is supposedly considered nikors best and sharpest lens..........and that if i can get close to his with f5.6 or f8........i should be satisfied with my canon lens.

he said nikon and canon will never put out the same photo. he said, and here comes the troubling statement from him......canon can put out a great photo...nikon can put out a great photo....they are both different and appeal to people differently. if this is true...as this is all his opinion, then maybe the nikon photo just appeals to me more.

the way i look at it....i will see for myself next week.

he reminded me that i set up the lights at the shoot at the seminar because i was one of the only ones there that had any experience with studio lighting and studio shooting.

oh shoot, i forgot to ask him if he had a filter on his nikon.

anyway...that's where it is right now. at least a little more info to give you all.

thjis has been a tuff couple of days for me.

i will post photos next week.
hooray...... br br i just got a call from the ins... (show quote)

I have read ever post on this thread and as many know, I am new to photography and know very little about all the details you all are talking about. I have no knowledge in physics but I think in a common sense manner. I know I am going to be wrong, but I can't help wondering in my simple thinking why if the instructor originally took the photos in Jpeg that you wouldn't already expect them to be sharper/clearer when printed out right away? RAW pictures won't print out on a printer, isn't that right? So, my question is, have you taken any shoots with everything the same, including taking them in Jpeg?

I print raw files every day. There is no reason why you cant print a raw file. Raw files are the complete file off of the camera sensor and they will have the most information therefore they are the best files. Jpegs are subject to default compressions from camera software. Jpegs are good files, nothing wrong with them but they do not have the information that is in a raw file.

I have mixed feelings about your side-by-side test: as a Nikonian, I am pleased with your Nikkor assessment; as your friend, I am sorry about your Canon assessment.

Are you still considering deep DoF product photography?

I use a free program called Picasa 3.9 to PP my images: http://picasa.google.com . One feature ("i" tab lower right) reveals all pertinent info about the image you are tweaking. Most PP programs have a similar feature.
