About 3 weeks ago I was cooking beef stew in the Crock-Pot. It had been cooking for a few hours and I wanted to give it a look and check the doneness. I lifted the lid to get a look inside when, suddenly, the the lid separated from the glass part and the knob was in my hand. I set it aside after determining it was nicely done and ready to serve. Later, I went online to the Rival Crock-Pot site to see if I could order a new handle. Didn't see anything that looked right for my pot. I did the online chat thing and spoke with the customer service lady there. After a few back and forth exchanges about model number and serial number she left and then came back after a minute or two. She said my particular model was on a re-call and they would take care of it. OK, I thought. All I had to do was cut the plug off and send it to them with a 3X5 card with my info on it. I wasn't too sure about it, but I went ahead and did it anyway.
Last Saturday a package appeared on my front porch from Rival with a brand new Crock-Pot. It was even a slightly larger one. 4.5 quart vs 4 quart. I was very pleased with everything.
Now here comes the amazing and astounding part: My old Crock-Pot was 17 yrs old! Bought it in 2002 and never had a problem with it.

That's the same crock pot that I just bought to replace my old one. It works well. My old one still worked fine, but it had a dent in it and the color was very old green that many kitchen appliances used to be. Very out dated so I replaced it.

I hope TomC answers this, I would be interested. Since it is so old maybe it is Japan, not made in China yet.

Do you mean that Avocado Green from the 1970s? That is old!

There is still virtue left in the world. Amazing. They'll get a lot of mileage out of having done the right thing.

Some name brands have incredible reputations. Not by accident....but because of their demonstrated performance.

I have several Crock Pots. I find them wonderful for slow cooked stews, soups, etc. They are also great for holding/serving chili and soups for guest. They are not great for general cooking.

My favorite is more of a counter-top roaster....because it gets much hotter, can braise and brown, cleans up easily, and makes superb dinners.

NESCO is the brand I have used for 40 years. Volumes range, but basically the internal surface is stick-proof, and the fully adjustable temperatures range from off to 450 degrees. I can roast a chicken, bake a beef or pork roast, make soups/red sauce/chili or pot roast. it will do it all.

I've had similar experiences with Crock Pot and they've really stood behind their products. Good company.

I have that same Crock Pot, that was your free replacement. I forgot what I paid for it, and where I purchased it from. Mine was bought several years ago. The one before that, just stopped working. Depending, how much you use it, your new Crock Pot should give you many more years of service. You, should be able to fix the old plug, and repair that lid. So, if you have extra guests, you won't have to make two separate pots of stew.

I certainly thought of that, but I don't want or need 2 Crock-Pots. The old one is now in the landfill.
