I was pleased to find out the EF 100-400 L II with the 2x III works as well. Auto focus works and no restrictions on focus points. After hundreds of small and large bird shoots I am very pleased with the results.

Maybe I'm missing something here but I don't believe that the auto focus does work on that lens with a 2X extender. You could manually focus with the 2X and it will work with the 1.4 and certain cameras that can auto focus at f/8.0.

I was testing it on the new Canon EOS R.

Thanks, were you testing that camera with the 100-400 II lens? What is the minimum aperture that the EOS R will auto focus? I know that it will work with the 1.4 extender but didn't think it would auto focus with a 2X extender, I thought f/8.0 was tops.

f/11 and sometimes f/10 with the 2x. It also allows multiple focus points with both extenders.
I also discovered that the EOS R can be set to 1.6 crop mode. With the 2x and the 100-400mm lens you have an effective 1200mm.

Thanks for the info, I have looked at the specs from Canon and no where have I been able to see anywhere that it will auto focus above f/8.0. It does mention the multiple AF focusing points If it does indeed AF at f/11.0 as you have found out then why isn't Canon shouting it from the roof tops, what a big selling point. You would have to be using the adapter on the 100-400mm. I shoot a lot of BIF and wildlife and 1200mm on the 100-400mm would be great for shooting from the car, a lot easier to maneuver in the car then the 600mm f/4.0 even without a 2x. The camera is getting good reviews on B&H.

Wanted to get an idea how my EOS R would perform with the EF 100-400 L II, 1.4xIII Extender, and, of course, the lens adapter. Didn't want to find out bad enough to go too far out of the warm house so this was taken from my porch. The rock was about 150' away.
Shot at f/8, 1/320, ISO 400, 560mm. Handheld JPEG.
The EOS R with that combination is 3/4" longer then my 5DIV with the same lens and extender. The EOS R combo weighs 4oz less then the 5DIV combo.

Have you also tried out that lens combo with the 2X extender as to AF? If so does the AF slow down with the 2X enough that it would inhibit doing BIF? At f/10 or F/11 one would need pretty good light. Another post here has sparked my interest in a possible new body. Just don't see any specs that cover this issue. Thanks

It does allow multiple focus points, with the 2x extender, so that helps with BIF shooting but the current weather hasn't given me a chance to try any BIF shooting. The focusing speed may be an issue. I think the Canon EOS R is still a "work in progress". I just installed my first firmware update and expect to see more in the near future.

Did you see the info that maybe you should not do that firmware update?

I did see the firmware comment but the complaint was something I don't even understand and the upgrade improved a "silent shutter" setting that I was glad to see.

Don't have the 2x extender to test. With that extender the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 becomes f/9.5-11. I believe that the EOS R will not focus at apertures slower then f/8.

Thanks, that was my understanding too. I checked all the info from Canon and couldn't find a thing. If it did it would be the biggest news story in photography. I know of no camera that will AF at apertures slower then f/8.0. I do have the 2X but not that camera or the 100-400 lens so I can't test it. Do hope to have the 100-400 soon but the jury is still out on the EOS R. One quick question, is there a delay in what your seeing and when you actually take the shot? I do need to do some more research. On the B&H sight on that camera under the questions the same question was asked and someone said that Canon had implied that it could AF at F/9 or f/10 but I can't find that info. Thanks

F/10 has nothing to do with speed. Aperture setting effects the amount of light that is available to the sensor. A setting of F/8 lets in more light than F/11. If there isn't enough light you can set a slower shutter speed or increase the ISO. The EOS R will focus in the dark. If the camera has timed out it comes back on immediately when you bring it up to your face or do any other camera function like touch the screen or a dial.

It depends on the camera body. Remember the EOS R maintains AF all the way to f/11. Previously the top was f/8. So this combination at full zoom would be f5.6+2 full stops or f/11. So, yeah it will have AF.

It was actually one of the most exciting features of the body (at least to me) when it was announced.

Ken Rockwell’s review reports autofocus on 100-400 with extenders. My understanding is the dual pixel with focus on the sensor requires less light than previous technology.

I have an EOS R on order and for me this was also one of the most exciting features. It will breath life into a couple older teles.

Thanks for that! I have not seen that spec. Well, actually, I never looked for it much since I don't have a x2 extender. Couldn't even find the spec that said it went to f/8 but I know it does from having tested that. Where can I find that spec? Might give me the incentive to get an x2 extender at some point.
