Wanted to get an idea how my EOS R would perform with the EF 100-400 L II, 1.4xIII Extender, and, of course, the lens adapter. Didn't want to find out bad enough to go too far out of the warm house so this was taken from my porch. The rock was about 150' away.
Shot at f/8, 1/320, ISO 400, 560mm. Handheld JPEG.
The EOS R with that combination is 3/4" longer then my 5DIV with the same lens and extender. The EOS R combo weighs 4oz less then the 5DIV combo.

Sure looks good to me and pretty good for an old guy to be able to hand hold such a long , in mm, lens. Very sharp and nice DOF. I'm still thinking about that lens, thanks.

Call me an old guy again and I'll throw my walker at you!

Looks good to me, it is what I am using, but not hand held. I am an old guy and need support when I use the long lens combination. Have also used the Tamron 18-400 with adaptor with decent results hand held.

I just wish that I was as "old" as you are. My eyes aren't as good as they once were and at first glance I thought you were throwing your wallet at me and I just was thinking, I hope it's full!

As long as RRS stands out of range, say three feet or so, he should be safe.

Throw my wallet at you? Sounds rather unfriendly, but, sure, if that's what you want! As far as being full, well, I did just buy a new camera and lens.........

My question is: did you compare the results with each camera? If so, and they are of equally good resolition, then you have a less expensive system, but not much in the way of weight saving.

I didn't make any comparisons with that particular shot. I just was curious as to how the EOS R would perform with the extender. Based on lens comparisons I had already done with several lenses, including the 100-400 I had a pretty good idea what the result would be, but, as I stated, I was curious. So far the EOS R has shown slightly better overall IQ, in my opinion at least. The auto focus definitely seems more consistent and accurate then with the 5DIV. The IQ and auto focus are not significantly better, but enough to be noticeable at times. The EOS R is certainly not a step backwards in those areas. In almost every way that matters to me I consider the EOS R to be equal to or better then the 5DIV.
The difference in overall length and weight are totally insignificant to me.

I've been experimenting with EF 1.4X II Extender on 100-400L II... but on 7D Mark II.

It's surprisingly good! I see very little, if any difference between the images done with the Extender versus those done with only the lens. I'm not accustomed to a zoom lens and a teleconverter working together so well! Note: The combo becomes an effective 140-560mm with aperture in of f/7.1 to f/8 over much of the range, so camera needs to be "f/8 capable". At first I forgot and put them on an older "f/5.6 limited" camera... where of course they wouldn't autofocus! 7DII only has a single f/8 capable AF point, at the center. Worked fine with that, though. I didn't notice much difference in focus speed (it was equally difficult to get and keep the very fast, little birds in focus with either the lens/TC or the lens alone!). A couple examples... first is the lens alone. The second is lens + teleconverter. Both images are slightly cropped. I actually had to do more sharpening on the shot with the lens alone (might have been subject movement).

Nice shots!
As I recall, when I used that lens and extender on my 7DII I had the center point and the four surrounding points. Still not a big focal area but better then nothing, which is what I had with my 6D if I remember right. You know, now that I think of it I don't remember what I had for focus points on the 6D with that combo. Haven't used the extender a lot but I did take my 5DIV, 100-400 L II and 1.4xIII to the F1 race in Austin and got very good results. The EOS R and 5DIV both give me all my focus points, but I haven't done much experimenting with the EOS R.

I was pleased to find out the EF 100-400 L II with the 2x III works as well. Auto focus works and no restrictions on focus points. After hundreds of small and large bird shoots I am very pleased with the results.

Don't knock it! I've been thinking about putting out a workout video. Now, if I could just figure out how to shoot video with this thing.......
