Steve Perry is a Nikon expert. He write in a down to earth, straight forward manner that makes everything clear and easy to understand and master. If you really want to learn about your Nikon camera and get the most out of it you could not get a better teacher than Steve Perry. He hosts what is known s Backcountry Gallery an on line resource that will also assist you.

He is the best resource you will find. Get BOTH books and use them over and over again.

Good luck.

In my opinion, for the information provided and price, these are some of the best values available. I have both and since I am a bit old school, I printed them and had them spiral bound at Office Depot so I could highlight and make notes in the margins. Great reference books. You will not be disappointed.

I have all of his books and think you would have a hard time finding a more informative and real user book anywhere. It's like having a really good friend explain how things work in a way that anyone can understand.

Both books are great! Get them now. If you shoot wildlife buy that book as well.

I have Steve Perry's "Secrets to the Nikon Autofocus System". It's excellent. They're e-books so you can't take them with you.

I also have the book: "The Nikon Autofocus System Mastering Focus for Sharp Images Every Time" by Mike Hagen. It's very concise and clear. It's good to have a paperback book to take with you. You can do a "Look Inside" on Amazon and see a lot of the pages. Be sure to get the 2nd edition. It's been updated to include the D500 and D5.

Why do you say "you can't take them with you"? I have all of Steve perry's e-books downloaded into iBooks on my iPad and take them with me while travelling, particularly in parts of both Europe and Africa without benefit of WiFi or cell phone service and am still able to open my iPad and read any of the books I have downloaded onto the iPad. I cannot confirm if this is possible on any Android device but can confirm that it works fine on an iPad IF the article, book or .pdf is DOWNLOADED to the iPad.

Hi, wondering whether any Nikon members who have both books, or know the contents of both, can advise whether a novice seeking to thoroughly learn the D7200 would benefit at the outset from BOTH Steve Perry's Exposure & Metering book and his Nikon AF Systems book? As a beginner who hasn't delved into AF modes at all yet, I wondered whether the Exposure & Metering book would do for a while.

I know ordinarily I could buy one now, one later but in 8 short weeks I'll be on the ocean with no internet access for weeks at a time. So if the AF-specific book is for much more advanced folk, I could wait & get it at its latest version a year or so down the road (ocean!) when I know what I'm doing a little better. But if the AF book is essential from the outset then I'd be best to get both now. That's the question I guess.

Thanks, Dione, Seward, Alaska

Dione, I am a user of two Nikon cameras, D5100 and D7200, two Olympus cameras, OMD EM10 Mk2 and OMD EM5 Mk2 and a Canon point & shoot. I can say with conviction, buy Steve's books! Contrary to what another poster has said, you can download the books to the iPad iBooks App and you will have access to each book while at sea when out of both cell phone and WiFi service. I do this all the time when travelling in remote areas of both Europe and Africa where there is no service for either cell phones or WiFi. If you have an Android device instead of an Apple iPad, then you will have to get advice from an Android device user as I am not knowledgeable about Android devices. Best regards, Garth

I own the Nikon Focus book. I have found it to be the best dammed book about this subject, bar none. Although I've been a photographer for over 50 years, I learned things. I loved the presentation, the flow and the in-depth yet completely understandable explanation of modern Nikon focusing systems along with their multiple variants. I am thinking about the exposure system book but I am already fairly knowledgeable in that subject due to my experience. I'm sure that if I decide to buy a copy that I will learn something.

I also have Steve's eBooks, you will not be disappointed. You can down load them and save them to a laptop or tablet and can be used any time and you will not need the internet.

Excellent content and they are entertaining to read. They are worth revisiting a few times.

My only complaint is that they aren't natively kindle format. I did figure out that I can get them on my tablet and "open with Kindle" to load them.

I don't know that this chorus needs another voice but, just in case, get the books!!
and get on his mailing list too. It that seems every time I've watched one of Steve's videos I learn things about the main subject of that video AND pick up other pointers along the way.

Steve has a nice segment on balancing the Wimberley WH-200 that I found quite useful...many good clips out there!

It is too bad that he has gone to digital. I preferred print.

Print isn't free and digital also makes for easy and free updates.

Indeed! What the photo community is able to get at a minimal cost now would be price prohibitive for many if the books were to be printed.
As for me, I can't enlarge a printed copy with my finger tips and I sorely need to enlarge everything I want to read.
