I don’t know about theirs, but between Federal, state, sales and property tax, I’m sure I’m averaging 30-35%, even in retirement (Social Security is even taxable beyond a minimum amount).

About 47% pay zero income tax.

Here in the UK the transfer is £80 and that's it, no tax, no such thing as usage fee and it lasts forever!

Yeah, The price of your fuel makes up for the taxes.
The voters here in Missouri rejected a slightly higher fuel tax, used for Road maintenance. Now the state is trying to figure out how to maintain the roads, A mileage fee was one suggestion ( how do you collect that?).

Moooooooooooooo, just like cattle....Follow the leader to the slaughter!!!!! BillNM has the right idea, STOP voting for the incumbent...(its like the definition of insanity.......doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting a different result.) Keep voting the incumbent in folks. You will not get anything different. We can sit in front of our computer screens and type out all the crap. As individuals WE the people can do nothing. But as a GROUP, we can do wonders by VOTING. Now I don't espouse voting for bleeding heart liberals who want to give the "house" away to people to lazy to work, or not here legally. I do say vote for PEOPLE that are for the PEOPLE. Folks, there is no Robin Hood. (take from the rich and give to the poor!) Socialism has been tried ALL OVER THE WORLD!!! As yet it has not worked in ANY country!!! It is insidiously creeping in right here in the U.S.A. Stop complaining about all the taxes and giving to those who don't deserve it. Do something about them. VOTE for a change.
Oh boy! I am sure some BHL here is going to skewer me for being conservative...I moved from the great welfare state to New Hampshire, and I just love the state motto: LIVE FREE OR DIE !!!
Rich...
In NYC we pay a $15 per car extra over NYS fees for the privilege of driving in the potholes that are everywhere, but bikes ignore the traffic laws and get a special lane! Now they , the city government, want congestion pricing for driving into Manhattan.[/quot

Why do bicyclists get their own lane without paying any registration fees for it. Plus they're a PIA to manuver around since they think they own the road. NYC is going third world trying to get bicycles as the main mode of transportation.

Years ago, when I lived in Virginia, they had a "Personal Property Tax". We had to list EVERYTHING we owned (cars, furniture, cameras, records...etc., EVERYTHING). It became known as the "Liar's tax"). I never knew ANYBODY who reported EVERYTHING. A few months after I moved to Florida, I received a bill from Virginia, saying I owed a little over $100 (I don't remember the exact amount). Since I no longer lived in Virginia, I mailed it back to them, with a message suggesting where they could stuff it. I never heard from them again, and it's been over a half century.

When I bought a new boat in April of 2008, I went to the Indiana BMV to register it. I was charged "lake use tax" for 2007 on a boat that wasn't even built then. Go figure.

Thankfully I don't have to get and pay for yearly emissions testing here in Georgia as I qualify for a "Senior Exemption". To qualify, you need to be over 65, drive a car over 10 years old and drive less than 5,000 miles a year. Since we have two cars, our lease car (2018 Subaru) does most of our mileage and since it's less than two years old, it is exempt from the emissions testing as well. By the time it isn't, I'll have a newer one.

What is the Real Estate Tax in New Hampshire where your property is located? You said you registered your bike in NH.

When I registered my motorcycle there, I was living in a trailer in a campground for a few summers, so I have no idea about the property tax. NH does not have a sales tax, so other taxes have to make up for that.

Interesting. In NY, a new car costs $10/year to be inspected for the first three years. Then it goes to $21.
Jerry, Consumer Reports is asking for stories just like this from its subscribers.
Think about the fees added to the base price of an event ticket with Ticketmaster, et al, or extra fees car dealers charge.
It’s all BS. Just a way to squeeze more money from us.

You got that right! I purchased my last concert tickets online and had them sent to my computer where I printed them out, myself. I was charged a $15 "processing fee" on top of the ticket price. Now, this was all done between two computers and the only human doing anything, was me. So what was the processing procedure I was paying for? A couple of microseconds of their computer's processing time?

When my son bought his new Fit, he paid $60 to transfer registration from the old car to the new one, and that was for just three months. Now the new registration is due, and that's costing $42 for two years, and they add a $10 "Usage Fee" onto that, for a total of $52. What's a "Usage Fee"? Is that a fee for using the license plates? And how is that different from the "Registration Fee"? I wonder what it would have cost to get a new registration with the new car. As it is, it's costing him $112 for two years. All the money we give to the state is a tax, so they should call it a tax.

It's the same with telephone bills, electric bills, cable bills, and many others. There are so many fees and taxes added that the amount they advertise is deceptive. When you buy a ticket for just about anything these days, there is a fee added to it. When I was working, I should have collected a "Showing Up" fee from my employer.

On the plus side, NY doesn't add property tax to the cost of registration. When I registered my motorcycle in NH, it cost about $150 for one year.
When my son bought his new Fit, he paid $60 to tra... (show quote)

Ain't that the truth! Here where I live, there are taxes of course, but also "fees" & "user charges",etc., while other things are just a flat fee. Some of the utility bills have so many "added charges" that you are paying for a lot more than you're receiving while others have just one stated charge. You have no way of knowing what you are paying for that you shouldn't be. Consumer Protection Agency (or whatever they call it)should do their job & get rid of this crap. What are they being paid to do?

Oh, I thought you had to be a resident to register car or bike. We are once again in the going through the residency requirements for declaring NH as a permanent residence. I was told by the town no transient part-time residents can vote or register their vehicles.

$30 per year in NC and an incredibly laborious, time-consuming and expensive process if the check engine light is on for any reason (which is an automatic emission fail even if the vehicle passes an actual emission test).
