When my son bought his new Fit, he paid $60 to transfer registration from the old car to the new one, and that was for just three months. Now the new registration is due, and that's costing $42 for two years, and they add a $10 "Usage Fee" onto that, for a total of $52. What's a "Usage Fee"? Is that a fee for using the license plates? And how is that different from the "Registration Fee"? I wonder what it would have cost to get a new registration with the new car. As it is, it's costing him $112 for two years. All the money we give to the state is a tax, so they should call it a tax.

It's the same with telephone bills, electric bills, cable bills, and many others. There are so many fees and taxes added that the amount they advertise is deceptive. When you buy a ticket for just about anything these days, there is a fee added to it. When I was working, I should have collected a "Showing Up" fee from my employer.

On the plus side, NY doesn't add property tax to the cost of registration. When I registered my motorcycle in NH, it cost about $150 for one year.

Jerry, Consumer Reports is asking for stories just like this from its subscribers.
Think about the fees added to the base price of an event ticket with Ticketmaster, et al, or extra fees car dealers charge.
It’s all BS. Just a way to squeeze more money from us.
There was a personal property tax on vehicles when I lived in Connecticut.
Must be a New England thing.

Why do people keep voting in the same ones and then complain? Never vote for an incumbent they have no new ideas.

All politicians know that their main objective is to get money from the people and pretend they're making life better for us. In the meantime, they keep getting richer.

Don't forget a big chunk of the tax dollar goes to those who have spent a generation on welfare and there are no levels of expectation that will end. Also the tens of millions of illegal aliens that have to have everything given to them.

What is the Real Estate Tax in New Hampshire where your property is located? You said you registered your bike in NH.

Half the lines on my Verizon bill are for various taxes - have no idea what they are and why split out. Similarly for our electric bill.
Probably low on politicians’ priority lists.

Term limits to start with would make a big difference in how our government is run. Taxes are needed to assure that certain services are performed for citizens. However, it seems that most cities, states and the feds are constantly upping our taxes to feed their pet projects. I am very fortunate to be living in Tennessee as our sales tax may be high but no state income tax and no personal property tax other than your home and that is low.

The worst are the cable companies. In our area if you want to get the Science channel they tack on the sports package. The sports package has a tax of $17 slapped on to it (it is listed with all of the other taxes). $204 a year and I don't watch sports.

Arizona is charging everyone an extra $32.00 fee for every car registered in the state. Supposed to be for road maintenance. We will see.

In NYC we pay a $15 per car extra over NYS fees for the privilege of driving in the potholes that are everywhere, but bikes ignore the traffic laws and get a special lane! Now they , the city government, want congestion pricing for driving into Manhattan.

Virginia has a property tax on vehicles also.

We used to have yearly Ad Valorem taxes on vehicles. Now it's only when that vehicle is sold. I just bought my Father in Laws 2006 Mazda Miata. Had I put it in my name only, the Ad Valorem tax plus $20 registration fee and the $18 title transfer fee would have come to about $380. Adding my wife and invoking the "family" transfer brought our total to $63...$20 of which is the annual registration fee.
and $18 the title transfer fee. Heck of a difference. We used to have to pay Ad Valorem taxes on a yearly basis but they did away with that back in 2013 IIRC. Glad I'm not still living in Maryland. My tax burden dropped considerably upon moving to Georgia.

$52 for two years? I wouldn't complain - ours is $72 for one year + $11 if you want a park pass added, have to renew every year, plus have to pay 6% sales tax on the purchase. And Michigan has the highest auto insurance rates, too.

I heard a repeal of the $32 is in play. I thought gas taxes were for road maintenance.

The extra $32 really is a good idea as the newer electric cars, by virtue of not using gas, avoid paying taxes for road maintenance. BTW, the gas taxes likely go to other Dept of Transportation projects besides road maintenance.
