I feel your pain. But there are few things in life I enjoy more than hearing my D500 fire off a round of shots at 10fps. It's true I may only get one in ten worthy of a deeper look and maybe one in 20 that I think is a quality shot. That part is a chore that simply must be done. If I only took one shot of a bird flying by fast, I fear I would get zero keepers. It's rarely the first shot in a burst of 10 or more that is the best of the lot.

The pixels are free, but it is grueling searching through about 500 shots from a good birding day for the few I'm going to put in my OK to display files and that 1 image that is the best of the lot.

Me too......I try to make it right before I take the shot if I have the time because I hate PP except for restorations and making old stuff look more up to date.

Some times when I read some of the various opinionated threads I feel as though I'm at an Antique Car Show where only the Rich need apply.....?

It's better to make the most of what you have and stop trying to be someone else or make a competition out of what should have been a learning experience and a point of enlightenment. Yes?

So, are you saying that the definition of insanity isn't what we've been told - "to keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different results," or are you saying, assume that we automatically know everything it takes to get a particular shot, give it a try at least once, perhaps throttled by antiquated technique, and if we don't immediately succeed, don't try anything new or different, just give up and accept defeat?

I don't know which camera you use, possibly a 7D MKii. I have mine set for focus priority. If the image is not in focus, it will not shoot. This slows the number of shots while panning, however my keeper rate is higher.
If your camera has such a function, give it a shot.
George

How would you know if your governing how many you shoot? Open it up and you may find you have twice the keepers.

Spray and Pray, well for one you stand a much better chance of getting that exact expression, emotion, or when something is about to be eaten, freezing that peak of action. Which is pretty touch to do even for the most experienced pro sports/ action shooters. Timing is everything and knowing your game or prey, preemptive strikes are rare. even for the best snipers. Unless you have mastered it as few have. There are exceptions just not to many. Those against it... a wall hanger is more luck than skill, and far and few between and fewer to choose from. Anyone telling you differently is F.O.S. Anything over 14 FPS as some boast 35-60 FPS...just how do you track a BIF when you can't see it because the mirror can't work that fast let alone the AF. Also that FPS is a BS number put out by manufactures to sell cameras. What lens, camera combo do you know that can track, AF and capture a tack sharp wall hanger while zipping along at 35 to 60 FPS. Think about it. So lets not claim your able to do the aforementioned let alone the gear. Anything over 12-14 fps., Why not just shoot video and grab a frame from that.

While I agree that focus priority is the way to go, in action you still miss a lot due to focus being locked, but on the wrong spot. Practice following and maintaining control is more important than FPS.

I use Photo Mechanic software in my workflow. It lets me quickly go through all my raw images and tag the ones I like. Then I select all the taged images and drag them into Lightroom or Capture One which I now use.
It was recommended by a number of people and I find it saves me a lot of time. Especially if you are using Lightroom as you have far fewer photos to import. Price is $150. There is a write-up on it in this month's PSA Journal.

I think their is a compromise. Short bursts would work great. Otherwise you are
making a video. Some creatives are shooting sequences in stills and stitching them
together into a movie. Very interesting stuff.

When I have used the RX10m4's high speed capture I've been able to "play" the sequence in slomo using FastRawViewer, holding down the key. It makes finding a good one much easier.

I just don't understand "Spray and Pray". I'm more of a "Deerhunter" type of photographer. One shot.

Wildlife at 10 frames per second. These 3 frames represent 2 tenths of a second. I understand what you are saying but those days are long gone. The second frame was pure luck because a 100th of second either way and I don't have the ball placement where it is at. It's because I "Spray and Pray" I earned the nickname "Godfather" at the High School where I take pictures. On another note many years ago when I first started taking pictures at the high school the person in charge of the year book asked to see the pictures I had taken. As he was picking out pictures I was deleting the ones he had not picked. He said "Those may be the only pictures the parent have of their kids". So for the next 15 years I posted all the pictures I shot and let them down load for free.

If you love spraying and praying that much, why not just switch to a video camera? I doubt you'll get any good singles but many love to watch videos.

Or get a camera with 4k or 6k photo mode...like Panasonic.

Do you limit that to Post Processing or do you apply that attitude to any kind of work in general?
