For what it’s worth the Fuji X100 series enjoy both electronic and optical viewfinders.

Cheers!

Compact cameras are mirrorless and I don't think there are any that have optical. My $600 Panasonic LX100 has an "EVF" (electronic viewfinder). You can turn off the "big screen" and the battery is not an issue. It works fine in sunlight. My wife has a more expensive Panasonic ZS100 and it has a usable EVF too.

I hope we P&Sers will not be booted from UHH by the DSLRers because we don't have and will never have a Hasselblad H5D Multi-Shot with a suitcase full of lens (I had to look this up and maybe there isn't a suitcase full lens for this beautiful monster). In any case you guys like pictures and so do we. Am I booted?

With respect, why on earth would you be booted from the forum? This is not a magazine where you read articles submitted by authors. This is a photographic forum where we, the members, submit photos for others to look at, sometimes critique and where we also have discussions about all things photography related.

If you want to have threads about point and shoot cameras then simply start a discussion as you just did. What would you like to talk about? I am positive there are thousands of members here that have point and shoot cameras either as a main camera or as something to carry with them when traveling. As for the Hasselblad H5D owners I don't have a real clue but I suspect there aren't maybe 5 people on the forum who owns one. Here you will find members who submit photos taken with their phones as well as those submitted by owners of high grade cameras, Leica, Nikon, Canon, Sony and so on.

We would love to see your submissions,

Dennis

So, I registered for this site because I wanted to know what other shooters are contending with. I haven't seen any articles about contending with conventional photographers. Still photography, right? We're still creating images whether in the darkroom or in LightRoom, it is still the capture. It is still the image. It is still a photograph.

We are the image makers. All of us.

John Fielder, a Colorado calendar photographer showed in a lecture that I attended that there are times when you cannot use a heavy DSLR camera with multiple lenses and that the only camera to use is a small point and shoot. He showed us some very dramatic photos taken with his camera phone while on a raft trip. I have gone on some off trail hikes and have noticed photographers struggling with heavy camera equipment hanging around their necks. Several Point and Shoot cameras are now very flexible and have good lenses. I have an Olympus TG-5.

Have you used the GPS track logger to collect data for your "big" cameras?

The only questions you have to ask yourself are: Do you own a camera (cellphone, P&S, 4/3rds, DSLR, etc.) and do you take photos of any kind? This site is for those who take pictures. The reason that most of the questions and answers are slanted to the interchangeable lens market is because that is the largest remaining autonomous camera market. Cellphones have all but totally replaced the P&Ss.

That means one that shoots P&Ss will have to ask specific questions or glean the relevant information from the various postings. Also, there are some of us that do not mind getting PMs about P&S and are willing answer to the best of our abilities or find the answer.

My “big” camera is my TG-5. I also have a disappointing Panasonic LUMIX Z550 which I never use. No, I had the GPS track logger on once when I didn’t know it and found that it really ate up battery life. I have used the O.I. Share and the Slow Shutter successfully. I re-read the information on the GPS track logger on pp. 78-79 but I still don’t understand what it’s supposed to do.

I'll second that! BTW, How many of you all actually own a Pentax and how do "you" rate it? Not looking for any advice. I have two, both very good image makers.

The bad news: compact camera have been decimated by camera-phones. The good news: There are some great "bridge" cameras out there. The better news: Some fine compact cameras are ending up donated to Goodwill, etc. I found a great 16 MP Powershot with a 24-560mm (equiv) lens, image stabilization, pretty high ISO, "live" preview with basic corrections, full manual and more for $5. It was obviously too much for somebody, so they now use their phone. Of course there are some old stinkers out there too that look pretty, but are 10-15 years old.

I don't use this instead of a DSLR...I use this along with my DSLR. My trusty ten year old P7100, all the settings of a DSLR at my fingertips. Great for street photography.

I have a Pentax K-50 with 3 lenses. However, lately, I've been using the bridge Lumix DMC ZS60 more. It is my "purse" camera, so it is usually with me. I've had some what are called "point & shoots" as my "purse" cameras, but NEED a viewfinder to take steady pictures hand held.

Some of these "old stinkers" can find a use. we paid $8 for an old shirt pocket Canon which my sister in law uses to put images on ebay or other sales media. Does the job as well as an expensive DSLR.

The best $10,000 camera system will take terrible photos if that is what the photographer does. While the simplest compact is capable of taking award winning shots that can appear on the cover of National Geographic. The nice thing about digital cameras is you can take loads of shots and easily discard those that don't work. Practice, practice and practice more. Read everything you can on composition, contrast and color balance. When you get a decent shot post it on UHH and people will be happy to tell you how to improve. I'm 72 and just getting back into photography, have a lot to relearn. Lets all have fun together.
