I join all the Hoggers who endorsed this gorgeous garden. Both times I went, I was lucky to be able to stay all day. The next-best sunken garden is Descanso Gardens at La Canada in Northern Calif. (a few miles south of "The Grapevine" on I-5).

Thank you Mary for taking a look and commenting, glad you liked them. It is always good to get confirmation from someone who has been there, I appreciate it.

Glad you liked the pix Bill, I appreciate your comments. I must admit though, one would have to work quite hard to take a bad picture amidst all the beauty there.

The Butchart Gardens is a group of floral display gardens in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, Canada, located near Victoria on Vancouver Island. Set on about 55 acres the gardens are designated a National Historic Site of Canada. They host over a million visitors every year. Originally limestone quarry mined for the mineral used in the manufacture of Portland Cement. The cement production exhausted the limestone deposits in the early 1900's. Mrs Butchart envisioned a grand garden and started by transferring top soil by horse and cart as the beginning of what is today is the Sunken Garden and all in all a Canadian National Treasure. These photos we taken on a trip from several years ago.

A very nice series that brings back good memories of our visit there in the summer of 1972, a year after we got married. We camped 5 nights in Goldstream Provincial Park. We need to go back.
