To me! If someone doesn't care about what I have to say then I wouldn't care about telling that person anything. However, I never did like the fact that the person had the ability to stop me from telling others in the thread. So I don't want to PM that person. I want to communicate with others who participate in the thread.

Another note about when it might not be appropriate to offer unsolicited criticism: I just saw some under-exposed backyard snow scenes in Gallery. The OP has been a UHH member since 2011, so I don't know that I'd want to make a suggestion in that thread. Those new to photography (and this forum) will often ask for feedback in their posts.
So, do take note of a poster's history: click on their user name to see how many topics they've created and open a few before leaping into critic mode.

My approach is no criticism unless asked or it is posted in the critical analysis page. I've found that some people do not want to get better at the craft of photography and thus criticism is not well-received by all.

"Constructive Criticism"??!! Most certainly! In my opinion "Constructive" includes some compliments, where they are due, combined with "nicely worded" suggestions that you feel would be helpful in improving the photo. Sadly, too often, "nicely worded" can be missing.

It is tough to crit others photographs. Many times I think that is not what it could be.
I am not sure what constructive criticism is.
Usually its framing. I like more space around things of interest. Too much color saturation.
I like vertical or horizontal to be straight most times.
I think the encourage given is more valuable to the shooter.

Even though this is a photo forum I personally try very hard (and most often succeed) not to critique anyone's work unless they ask for it. I feel if they wanted suggestions, opinions and whatnot they would include that request in their post. Now I'm sure Linda could phrase a recommendation in such a way that no one could take offense but she is an exception in this forum population.

This thread has much talk about folks reacting negatively to criticism (constructive or otherwise) and this discussion has been going on for years and years. Let's not forgot to mention that many times it is the one doing the critique who gets upset, when the photographer does not agree with the critique! I have even witnessed "experts" arguing in the Photo Critique section over who is giving the best critique!! Ah, such fun.
