I always look at the photographic gallery as there are many excellent images posted. However is it acceptable to post constructive criticism on those images that,in my opinion, could be improved by a tweek here or there. I certainly don't want to offend anybody. What is the groups opinion.

It varies with each photographer. Gallery is generally more for social sharing. There are other sections of UHH that encourage feedback. Two are For Your Consideration and Landscape. See "all sections" at the bottom of this page. Each sub-forum has guidelines posted on their home pages. There is also a critique section, but the moderators abandoned it awhile back; it would be great if someone could take charge (moderators are needed because many folks here don't know how to behave ).

Personally, unless I know a user very well I would not "speak up" in a thread. If you can't resist, you could send a private message and see how it is received.

The work I've seen of yours is great! So you may have a great deal of experience with critique as well, in which case you already understand that much of it is subjective. About the only thing you will find consensus of opinion on here is sloping horizon lines

Also, if you look at a poster's history, you'll get a sense of what their processing styles are and/or their experience. Use that as a guideline for what to say and whether to say it.

P.S. You are welcome to critique anything I post!

It is acceptable to critique images in the Photo Gallery section if the Opening Poster asks for it.

From the section rules: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-426-1.html
Photo Gallery Section
This section is for posting pictures you took. If you want to ask others to comment on your choice of subjects, composition, settings, show off your pictures to others, or ask for general critique, then please do so in the Photo Gallery section.

Attaboys/Attagirls aren’t really productive, although it’s sometimes easy to find things that a newbie has done right, even if the image isn’t the greatest. But I don’t generally critique unless invited.

If not asked for in the text of the post, it's unlikely to be welcomed.

If I see something in an image that can be tweaked, I speak up. I have a THICK skin if they rebel. Most times people take it as constructive input. Bottom line, go for it.

If the OP (Original Poster) asks, I will tactfully and honestly try to give them constructive feedback IF I have something to add. That old saying, "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all." usually applies.

However, after seeing some folks post picture after picture that is out of focus, overexposed, etc. and they get comment after comment like, "Nice set.", "Good One.", sometimes it gets to me. How can they ever improve under those circumstances? Occasionally, if I'm in a certain mood, I will suggest something to them, while trying my best to be nice.

The few times I have done that, the OP actually thanked me for the advice, while those that had given nothing but praise jumped all over me. That's OK, I can live with it.

If people really want feedback, they can go to their Profile and under their Signature Line say as much. Most folks have not done that, me included.

I love this site and have learned an incredible volume of knowledge from it. I recommend it to everyone I know that is a photographer or is interested in photography. But I also warn them that some folks can get carried away in their rudeness.

Personally, I welcome any advice I can get and I just ignore the dross.

Each section has rules as the first post. Reading them spells out most of the dos and don'ts.

The Photo Gallery rules specify that the poster may ask for a general critique. Specifics should be addressed in those sections designed for such things. Some people use their signature to emphasize that they don't want to be critiqued or don't want to see reposts of their images. My signature line since I joined reads this way:

"Say what you want about my pictures, I have thick skin. Repost if you want, but then you own it. :)"

I think how welcome critique is accepted is split about 50 50. a little goes a long way, especially when supported by praise for the good bits. But some do love to procrastinate about 'their' history and how 'they would approach that subject'. This is not a competition site....everyone should be learning how to be a winner in their own eyes.
KISS works
have fun

Linda is quite correct: UHH is a social media site (and gear sales
forum).

Limit your comments to gushing praise (and exhortations to run out
and buy the latest equipment) and you can't go wrong.

I haven't posted many photo's at all but any kind of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism of what I post would be very welcome indeed. Just telling me it sucks without why would not be very helpful. If I don't care for something I usually just keep on scrolling

Everyone has a different opinions and when asked I will sometimes give mine. Generally if I have a suggestion I do it in a PM to the person and not post it for the public to read. I have found for me that the advice or comment is much better received that way.

I have had a few people send me a PM to make suggestions or ask me questions and I readily reply and thank them for showing interest in what I am doing in my photography.

Not enough consideration for others’ feelings has discouraged many a newcomer.

You may be put on the ignore list for doing so.
