Let me just say:

1) Why would anyone want to be a beta tester for Canon?

2) The FF mirroless cameras are not ready for prime time

3) What is with that slidey control thing??!!???

4) What no second card slot!!!!!

5) Why no IBIS???

6) and....

I AM SO JEALOUS!!!! I WANT ONE!!!

Just placed my order with B&H for the EOS R as well as the R 24-105 lens and the programmable adapter ring so that I can use my existing lenses. It will be here tomorrow. I've had no interest in mirrorless but my curiosity finally got the better of me now that Canon has introduced the EOS R. I'm selling my 7DII which I have barely used since buying a 5DIV in 2016. Keeping the 5DIV. Since the 5D and EOS use the same sensor it should make for an interesting comparison.
Been recovering from surgery and have gotten in a bit of a rut so a new toy should get me out and about again. Just wish it was warmer! Hopefully I will have some interesting shots to post.

Congratulations on a) your good recovery from surgery - and b) your decision to purchase the new EOS R.

BTW, L - just a note on your use of EOS to describe the new R. EOS (Electro-Optical System) which is the Canon name for their Automatic Focusing System - has been in use since they abandoned the FD mount system in 1987 - and has been part of the name of every Canon ILC released, since. The full name of your 5D4 - is Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, and the full name of your 7D2 is Canon EOS 7D Mark II. So, either call it the R, or the EOS R, but NOT just the "EOS" - as that doesn't make sense. … Happy Shooting!!!!

Get well soon! Now get out there and shoot something and post samples so that we may drool over them.

You will like Mirrorless as long as your passion is not fast moving sports or nature. Good luck with your new toy and yes, get out of your rut and have some fun, another thing about mirrorless is that if you are so inclined they are much better suited for the use of old vintage lenses than DSLR's are and that can be a fun new journey of its own.

I had a 7DII which is widely considered to be Canon's 2nd best camera for wild life and sports, after the 1DX II that is. Barely have used it since I bought my 5DIV in '16. Just shipped it out today. I just never took to the camera despite it's frame rate. When we went to the F1 race in Austin I left the 7DII home and took the 5DIV. No regrets.
The EOS R may not have the frame rate of the 7DII but it's auto-focus is every bit as good, if not better. I don't think I will be too disappointed no matter what I shoot with it.

Damn!! Like you I needed some surgery. I had my rotator cuff repaired. I also decided to
"treat" my self. Besides, it was time. I never thought of a camera. I could have saved a chunk of change. The present came just before Christmas. I love the smell of a new car.

Funny you should say that! I am in the habit of trading my pickup every three years. Right about now I should have ordered my 2019. Instead, since I don't put on the mileage I did before I retired and since my 2016 just turned 25,000mi I decided to put off trading for a year. Bought a camera instead!

I shoot Olympus mirrorless cameras and I have been very happy with them. All of my photography life I have been a Nikon man.
I am sure you will find your mirrorless camera to be an asset. Small, easy to carry, fit anywhere and it is very capable of excellent photography.
Congratulations and get well soon.

Thank You!
Actually, the EOS R, being a full frame, is not that small. While it is smaller then my 5DIV it still has a very good feel in my hands. I was afraid it might feel like a toy or be too small to use the controls easily. Just got it earlier today and so far I am quite satisfied.

Congrats and get well soon.

I've been thinking about doing the same, purchasing an R, so I am anxious to hear how the EOS R works out for you. I have a M5 and like it a lot, but mounting EF lenses on it can weigh it down a bit.

I've read a lot of good reviews about the R so let us know how you like it.

Thanks! Hopefully I will be posting before long. Just got it this morning and I am finding out that there is quite a bit to learn about it. Accidentally turned on the video and then spent 10 min figuring out how to turn it off! That kind of stuff.

I did exactly the same thing, ie, all my life Nikon to presently Olympus and couldn't be happier!

I was told that a friend of mine who has had a studio for over 40 yrs just switched his portrait photography from Canon to Olympus. If he made the switch then Olympus must have something pretty good.

I gave up my 7DII when I purchased my 5DIV but have to admit that I missed the pixel density of the small sensor, so I soon bought a 5DSR because I got tired of gawking at Regis's eagle picks. I still use both of the full frame bodies, however I will admit the problem with the 5DSR is that once you have a 50mp body you start gassing again for the very sharpest of lenses. They don't necessarily improve your photography but they do relieve gas, if only for a moment.

1) Why not? A little adventure is good now and then.

2) I wouldn't be too sure about that. It may not be what the pro's are looking for but that will be coming I'm quite sure. In the meantime this looks like a pretty good start for the rest of us.

3) Not sure yet!

4) Not a big deal to me.

5) Canon's in-lens stabilization is excellent, IMO, although I have read of some development of IBIS taking place.

6) Heck, I bet B&H, Adorama, Canon, and a bunch of others would be happy to sell you one! Go for it! What else are you going to do with your money other then pay bills and put food on the table? Convince your
family that one meal a day is a new, healthier lifestyle!

I use a Fuji X-T2 for my vintage lenses and have been quite impressed. I can tell you from that experience that I have been blown away by things like focus peaking and exposure preview. Not so sure how that all works with lenses designed for the camera as I have never mounted a Fuji lens on it.

Thanks!
I'm aware of the EOS history even though I have sometimes omitted the R in this discussion. Didn't think there was much chance of anyone mistaking what I was referring to. Besides, hitting that extra space, shift, and R key takes a lot of energy that would be better spent pushing buttons on my camera!

Yes, but writing E O S INSTEAD of just R - is - AT LEAST - two more key depressions!!!

The added pixel density of the 7DII over the 5DIV can be handy when cropping, such as with BIF. For whatever reason though I just never enjoyed the 7DII like the 5DIV or even the 6D or 70D that I have had.
I have read rumors of a more pro model mirrorless with 70-75mp that Canon will supposedly release in the 4th quarter of this year. So......
