Well, I Did It! Giving Mirrorless A Try!

Just placed my order with B&H for the EOS R as well as the R 24-105 lens and the programmable adapter ring so that I can use my existing lenses. It will be here tomorrow. I've had no interest in mirrorless but my curiosity finally got the better of me now that Canon has introduced the EOS R. I'm selling my 7DII which I have barely used since buying a 5DIV in 2016. Keeping the 5DIV. Since the 5D and EOS use the same sensor it should make for an interesting comparison.
Been recovering from surgery and have gotten in a bit of a rut so a new toy should get me out and about again. Just wish it was warmer! Hopefully I will have some interesting shots to post.

Good luck with your recovery and the EOS R. I'm interested to see how long before Canon abandons the EF mount altogether. I have a lot wrapped up in glass and I'm not even considering any new glass anymore.

Sounds like a man with a plan. Looks like you know what you want and if it gets you out and about, good for you! I think you will enjoy it.

Hope it works well for you. What you ordered is what I have, and really liking it. I did not get the ring adaptor, so far I have had no problems using Canon, Sigma and Tamron lenses with the adaptor.

Thank You! Recovery is about complete. Hence the need for a new toy! I would imagine that DSLR's and the EF mount will be around for a long time. It wouldn't make any sense to put the R mount on future DSLR's without also changing the focal plane location. Seems unlikely because of mirror interference. I do think though that from here on out we will see an increased emphasis on mirrorless by Canon and Nikon, especially when they start introducing professional models.

I saw a repeat of a Canonrumors post that said EF development has been paused for a year so Canon can concentrate on RF lenses. Paused is one of those soft undefined marketing words I was paid to re-define or make up before I saw the light and went full commando into sales.

Given Canon's history of abandoning and orphaning lenses and accessories, I was surprised to see the EF and EF-S adaptors on the "R." I suspect it is a way to definitively get someone to adopt a new body model and keep their glass and phase out the legace (EF Legacy???) items and replace with what are reported to be the very superior and enormously expensive and LARGE RF lenses.

While I love my EOS system and take heart in the naming of the mirrorless EOS R, Canon's wisdom of preserving users' lens investments is less than infinite. They have assiduously avoided the burden of Backward compatibility encroaching on new product development.

Backward Compatibility was enough to KILL a few COmputer Companies in the last Century. Watching developments over this next year will demand the utmost fine reading of words like pause.

At the moment I'm heartened by my decision to postpone my upgrade (if ever) to Full Frame until the EOS R bodies and lenses are better defined. 2020 might be the time to either move to the R or, seeing that I'm 75, maybe play out the used 5D market until ALL my photos are virtual and (hopefully) heavenly.

Get well soon! Now get out there and shoot something and post samples so that we may drool over them.

I don't blame Canon for pausing EF development. The EF's already cover just about every need there is and include some of the finest lenses on the market. I doubt that the R lenses are optically very much superior to the EF's, especially the L's. I'm guessing that it is the characteristics of the mirrorless that is producing the perceived improvement. From what I have read, and will soon find out first-hand, the EF lenses work even better on the EOS R then on the DSLR's. If so, then it is the camera making the difference.
As far as backwards compatability, that's a no-brainer. All it takes is an adapter, a spacer actually, to provide the correct distance to the focal plane and you are in business. Every EF and EF-S lens made in the last 30 years or so now works on the EOS. Bravo! If Canon hadn't done it 3rd party manufacturers certainly would have.

You will like Mirrorless as long as your passion is not fast moving sports or nature. Good luck with your new toy and yes, get out of your rut and have some fun, another thing about mirrorless is that if you are so inclined they are much better suited for the use of old vintage lenses than DSLR's are and that can be a fun new journey of its own.

Damn!! Like you I needed some surgery. I had my rotator cuff repaired. I also decided to
"treat" my self. Besides, it was time. I never thought of a camera. I could have saved a chunk of change. The present came just before Christmas. I love the smell of a new car.

I shoot Olympus mirrorless cameras and I have been very happy with them. All of my photography life I have been a Nikon man.
I am sure you will find your mirrorless camera to be an asset. Small, easy to carry, fit anywhere and it is very capable of excellent photography.
Congratulations and get well soon.

Congrats and get well soon.

I've been thinking about doing the same, purchasing an R, so I am anxious to hear how the EOS R works out for you. I have a M5 and like it a lot, but mounting EF lenses on it can weigh it down a bit.

I've read a lot of good reviews about the R so let us know how you like it.

I did exactly the same thing, ie, all my life Nikon to presently Olympus and couldn't be happier!
