PS there are many many signs before you getting there explaining where you are going. You can easily extrapolate Holland Tunnel from what was there. Extremely hard to miss the tunnel once you reach the point where the photo was taken. My first time there I did not miss it and didn't need the sign over the big cave to figure out it was the tunnel.

Yes. It is called traffic.

Both shots were made at the lowest level of traffic.

However, one has to keep in mind that the name is an official directive sign identifying the entry to the tunnel. The placement over the N and the O can definitely confuse visitors to the area. I have had problems with signage when "modified" by decoration or spray paint. GPS and map do not help in congested traffic. The decorations could have been mounted above the letters to avoid confusion. I would say that the placement was done by someone who does not use the tunnel. (It is said that the traffic design engineers do not use the results of their efforts.)

Actually, even on a good day, the entry to the tunnel can be problematic if you are not in the proper lane at the tunnel.

Can we direct the damages to you when collisions occur due to the inability to read the sign at high traffic? Just asking.

Seriously, the change was necessary and timely to prevent potential accidents that could occur due to the inability to identify the sign.

(I've driven that stretch a few times when I visited NY/NJ.)
However, one has to keep in mind that the name is ... (show quote)

Anyone that couldn’t figure that out not only shouldn’t be driving but shouldn’t be allowed out in public!

Aah, you don't understand, lights in NYC for pedestrians mean 2 things green = WALK and red = RUN,

ROFL- so decorations or no decorations in place, someone approaching this tunnel is surprised!- Tell me what their options are? See- you've blown past all the warnings about tolls, hazmat, Holland Tunnel, New York City...etc. etc. etc. and now you are in 9 lanes of ONE WAY TRAFFIC and your very next destination has already been determined since you passed the last possible exit. I suppose you could expect that the only tunnels there are in existence both of which will bring you to the same place... albeit 2 miles farther down the island.

However I do see your point... it could be confusing for people expecting to enter Holland... imagine their surprise at discovering they come up after a few minutes... in New York City! The nanny state must do something for these traumatized people expecting Rembrandt and dykes... (probably can find both pretty quickly- but windmills are scarce) maybe a free drive through counseling session of some sort- though going the other direction would probably have a greater need....

Sorry to pick on you , but once you get to the point- you are committed- there is no way to turn around, and the only other tunnel there is, is only 2 miles away and it goes to Hell* instead of Lincoln Nebraska........ so if you are hopelessly lost because of a wreath and a tree barely obliterating the name of the tunnel- and you can't figure out which it is... and can't imagine where it might go... well we have bigger problems.

* Lincoln Tunnel comes up near "Hell's Kitchen ;)

This is all much ado about nothing.

1 - As Architect1776 correctly pointed out, there are directional signs everywhere leading you to the tunnel. If you pay attention to them, that’s where you end up.
2 - As I correctly pointed out, that’s the tunnel entrance in NJ, not NY.
3- There are 8+million of us; what’s a “typical New Yorker?”

People seem to be missing the point here. This is a photography forum so, presumably, aesthetics have some relevance. It's not that the sign is confusing; it's that it's jarring to paste a triangular shape (the tree) on the letter N and it's equally jarring to see a circular shape (the wreath) on the letter U. Whoever did it had no eye for harmony. Now with the tree on A and the second wreath removed from U, it looks a lot better.

Ok, How could you POSSIBLY determine wanting to move the decorations as being either anti-American OR anti-Christian????

Exactly. And the fact that they put the wreath over the O means they realized that --- and then they dropped the ball with the tree. Basically, the survey was just a distraction because the Port Authority didn't eant to admit it screwed up.

All this talk about decorations is meaningless. The only thing that really matters is the traffic. For those of you who have never driven through the Holland Tunnel or Lincoln Tunnel or driven over the George Washington Bridge to go to Manhattan, my suggestion is DON’T. Traffic in Manhattan moves at a snail’s pace and parking will break your budget. From New Jersey take a bus or a train and in Manhattan walk or take the subway. Happy New Year to all.
