I like the focus on the head as I think that is the subject of the foto.

I am partial to the focus on the head, the time difference between the two, the horizon colors changed.

Focus on the phone. I find focus on the hair to be distracting and wondering "why?".

I like the one with focus on the cell phone. It gives a nice highlight to the back of her head also. Both are nice images.

You asked two questions: " What is the subject of the shot? What were you trying to capture? ". Honestly HardworkingGal when I shot both of the photos I did not have a preset intention. I took both to compare later on when I could spend more time at the computer and evaluate the photos with the post processing process. During the photo shoot I often take many extra photos knowing that I will be deleting many of them later. On sunsets like this one, we all know that it changes so rapidly that you have to shoot fast.

First off, I want to thank each and everyone that has expressed their opinions on this post. It's really interesting to me your thoughts on this. I'd also like to thank IDguy for his cropping suggestion. I really like it.

I like IDGuy's crop also. It clarifies that the phone is the subject of the photo and deemphasizes the hair as an alternative, conflicting focus of the picture but provides a frame and a context for the phone. Like I originally said, this is a very interesting experience/experiment.

First one. Shows more of the total subject - a person shooting a beautiful sunset. The second one doesn't really show as much of the sunset she is taking and the cellphone image is too small to show much of it.
