Focus on the cell phone! The back of her head is not the subject of the picture. Her focus is on the cell phone, and focusing on the back of her head makes no sense.

If it is someone I know and who is important to me, I would certainly prefer to have focus fall on the person, not on the phone. This directs more emphasis on the person doing the activity. And the details on the phone screen are not really that important; even in the example with the phone out of focus, it is obvious what is happening and what is being displayed on the phone's screen.

Of course if the intention is product photography and the shot is about presenting the phone, then focus should fall on the phone rather than the person holding the phone. The person basically serves as an anonymous prop in that situation.

I really like what you have done with my photo! By cropping it the way you have it makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

It was just to illustrate the idea. You might want to try several with different aspect ratios and rule of thirds positioning.

I took this photo in two ways......one with focus on the cell phone and the other with focus on her hair. Which do you prefer? I have my opinion but don't want to sway your answer with my thoughts.

Brent,

I can’t explain why, but my eyes prefer the second photo.

What is the subject of the shot? What were you trying to capture?
I find that the hair shot is easier to look at, seems smoother though the sunset isn't as vibrant, while the phone shot, though the phone and the picture on the phone are very clear and appealing, the rest of the shot is not very pleasing to look at.

So for opinion purposes my vote goes to head.

Very good crop of a shot that at first I didn't like.

Brent, Nicely done; we vote for number one (focused on head) and number three, not shown, focused on the sunset:). sv

I like the focus on the hair. Otherwise there's really nothing in focus. The phone image is too small in relation to the huge oceanscape to be the subject. With the focus on the phone, at least to me, nothing is really sharp. I know there's not a lot of interest in the hair but the way the picture is set up I'd want something to be sharp and obvious. The small phone screen isn't too obvious to me.

Brent, this is a very interesting exercise. I can see the point of those who favor the phone being sharp...but it's such a small part of the image. My first reaction was that you missed focus because the head is a large part of the frame and bright compared to the rest of the picture...and it's not in focus. If the head were really out of focus and the phone was sharp, I'd see the point...front bokeh and rear bokeh with phone in focus, but that's not what is conveyed to me immediately. I just don't get that knee-jerk reaction of being out of focus in #1. That's my impression. Hope it's helpful. jak
