We received eight-plus inches of snow on Sunday afternoon continuing into the night and have included one image of it coming down along with an image of a hen cardinal and two images of a pileated woodpecker. The woodpecker images were taken yesterday in a drizzle as it was feeding at the stump of an ancient white oak which we had taken down a few years back and if you look close in the last image you will see what it was feeding on! Conditions were pretty dark so the aperture was wide open on the Tamron 150-600 at 6.3 and the speed set at 320- 500 with the iso a maximum of 6400 and the distance was about ninety feet.

They fly through my yard all the time, chisel at the trees on the hill behind the house, but I never seem to be able to capture a good shot of a pileated woodpecker. Nicely done!

Thanks, erbiv and about the same thing happens here but every once in a while I luck into a shot. If you have any dead or diseased or dying trees or stumps that have not been removed keep an eye on them when they age as they are likely to harbor carpenter ants and grubs and the woodpeckers love both! You can also purchase some giant suet holders into which you place two cakes and according to people on here, they work very well! I just have quite a problem with the other birds, squirrels, and raccoons feeding on them and carrying off feeders so anything like that I need to take inside at night! Good luck and thanks again!

Great photos, Corky.
Thanks, Earl and appreciate you taking a look! Take care
Oh what a wonderful winter wonderland, Corky, but way too cold for a gulf coast wimp like me!
Beautiful shots of all, and I'm very envious of your pileated. I see those magnificent birds from time to time in the state parks here, but they're gone before I can get my wits together enough to get a shot.

Thanks, Donna and really appreciate you looking and it's way too cold for us also and most years we don't have to contend with anything like this until sometime in January or many times February or early March, and even then this much snow doesn't happen very often but as I remember it did happen last year!
Both Ellen and I agree that we never want to move one mile north of here...Yesterday while watching a flock of mallards feeding along the water's edge I noticed something flicking up and down and first thought it was a squirrel flicking its tail, but then saw a flash of red and a closer look showed the woodpecker hammering at the base of the stump!.. Hope you guys are doing great and have a great Christmas and by the way, did you look closely at the last image of the woodpecker to see what it was feeding on? Thanks again and take care!

Many thanks, Greg and really appreciate you taking a look and responding! As I told Donna and I know that this has happened to you many times, I was watching a flock of mallards feeding close to the edge of the water when I happen to see something moving up and down and thought it was a squirrel flicking its tail but then noticed a little red and a closer look showed the big woodpecker hammering away at the base of the stump and by the way did you see what it had in its bill in the last image? Thanks again an take care!
