I had that problem. Temporarily disabling Norton antivirus program solved it. I learned this by a conversation with a Norton tech.

I know,I have been thinking about that.I have Webroot & am going to get in touch with them, thanks for your reply!
I have the same issue EVERY time it updates. Have to do a forced shut down and reboot each time. This latest one has caused the computer to freeze frequently as well as to run much slower. Lightroom and Photoshop CC are both having major problems as well. Lightroom now goes dark frequently during normal operations. I, too, have about had it with Windows.

I would get rid of this darn windows pc if I could afford a Mac.I have an iPhone & an iPad & love them both! Thanks for your reply,I am glad to know I am not alone in this update crap!

Better yet, just uninstall Norton - a bloated set of aps that add little if anything to the Windows Defender anti virus built into Windows, and consumes both storage and processing resources, as well as interfering with updates as you describe.

I don’t have Norton,I have Webroot & I don’t think I would uninstall it.I just don’t know why u can’t get in touch with someone from Microsoft,a real person not a robot assistant!

I was replying to sodapop, but sorry for your issues. Just a thought - have you checked your internet download speed? Some major updates are fairly large and can take awhile if it’s slow. If you haven’t already, you might download a copy of Ookla speed test and run it.
Now that's very helpful to her. BTW: Are you oblivious to the many issues Mac's had with the Mojave update. If that is your best solution, perhaps you might just not reply! I, along with most, updated with no issues.

I do have a fast download speed. It downloads really fast but when it goes to upload it to my pc that is where the problems start. It will start uploading with the little yellow circle going round & round until it gets to about 82% then the yellow circle quits going around & it stays like that for hrs. & hrs.I then force it to shut down it will say don’t shut down your pc,it will be at 10% & that will stay like that for hours & hours.I then force it to shut down again & that is when it says it is going back to the older version.I have people tell me just leave it alone & let it update, but my gosh it shouldn’t take 24hrs.to update!😢 I know this is going to ruin my pc eventually!
I had the same experience, I contacted MS via telephone and they took control of my Desk Top and resolved the issue. They also informed me that some software updates are not always compatible with all computers, but that MS resolves these compatibility issues as they learn about them.

Yes,I am having issues with updates again for 2018. I have searched for any solutions but I can’t seem to find anything.I started the updates @ 10:30 p.m. last night & when I got up this morning @ 7:30 a.m. it was stuck @ 30%. I had to shut it down & restart it with no new updates.I went to Microsoft web site & ran the trouble shooter that said there was nothing wrong.Did any of you have these issues & if so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,

I had a similar problem two days ago. I shut down and let it do the update before it turned itself off. When I turned it on again, it was stalled for a long time - maybe fifteen minutes. I shut the computer off manually, and it restarted normally. Shutting it down later, it went through the update process again, but then it restarted normally.
As usual, it changed My Pictures and My Files back to Pictures and Documents.

Buy a Mac. ---- Problem solved.
The latest three updates loaded fine but slowed down my widows 10 machine to a crawl. I called Microsoft and the paid Microsoft help trashed my machine and I spent over 15 hours with the their help to without success. Now I am paying for a local shop to fix the issue; I will need to reload all my software office, adobe lightroom and other, two drafting programs and other programs. I am NOT happy.
I hesitate to stick my nose in here, but what the heck.
Before trying a fix, you should try to figure out where the problem is by examining the logs: Control Panel>System and Security>View event logs (under Administrative Tools). You may have to hunt around here but I would suggest checking the Windows section, looking for a red circle with and exclamation point in it. That may point you in the right direction.
Then make sure the Registry is in good shape. There are a number of tools to do this; I use the free version of CCleaner (Google it). But before running your tool, create a Restore Point just in case (Google "Create restore point in Windows 10," if you don't remember how to do this).
Incidentally, for those whose systems slow down after an update, you might want to run the usual tools on your drives--Right click the drive and select Properties. Click Disk Cleanup. After this has run, select to Tools tab and run the two tolls listed there, top to bottom. Remember to create a restore point before doing any of this.
Good luck.

When I got up that morning my pc had been updated and restarted and the only way I knew it was because the programs I start manually were not running.
I can honestly say that I have never had a problem with an MS automatic update...
Sorry for your pain,
Ed
