This photo was taken at Belmont Racetrack in trainer Gary Contessa’s stable. I was wondering which rendition you think is better?

ISO 500 - 50mm - f/7.1 - 1/160 sec.

Additional critique, comments and suggestions always welcomed. Thanks

Nice work. I'd vote for the black and white, in this case. The color really doesn't add much, as the horse is your primary subject.

The B&W is harsh. Color is important because horses are not all the same color.

Thanks for looking and commenting Delderby.

Since I started shooting race horses in 1971, I have shot about as many as anyone breathing today.

Day in and day out, my favorite shots (and I think my best shots) are of these magnificent animals in their stalls.

One of my all-time favorite shots I took at Belmont in 1987 the morning after Alysheba failed to win the Triple Crown.

It was obvious to me that he knew that it was not his fault.

I love both of your shots. Really hard for me to say which I prefer. Probably the latter. Keep it up. And keep sharing.

The B&W portrait is super. There is so little color in the color version, it's almost a distraction.

Thanks for opining.

Both, but I prefer the color. The earthy colors seem to bring the portrait to life.

Thanks Donna, right now most seem to prefer the color.

Since this scene is very much monochromatic I think either image shows off the horse of just fine. Of the two you have shown here, I lean towards the color only because the shadow detail is a bit better.

Thanks for viewing and commenting.

I believe the color version is more appealing. You can just see the amber color of the horse’s eyes and it makes the wood at the right side of the stall seem warmer. The pink line on the horse’s nose next to the left nostril is more prominent in color.

I like them both. Sorry, I cannot choose between them. Since the horse is a grey, doing it in B&W is really nice. But adding the touches of colour almost make it like a B&W with selective colouring.

Hi. Yes, I like the subtle color. Thanks for commenting AzPicLady.
