Hello HOG members.

My wife and I have become addicted to chasing the Orca whales around Puget Sound these days. The most beautiful thing I have seen in a long while. My problem is I only have a 55/250 canon lense on my EOS t2i. I most certainly need more power to get better shots from long distance. I am not going to change the camera just want a lense to reach out and touch those wonderful creatures.

I know there are many members that can help me upgrade my lense for this. Any and all suggestion are welcome.

Thank you in advance for all your assistance.

The best upgrade for you, especially in relation to cost, is the 70-300 IS II nano. The 400 L prime is a very nice lens but requires very good support/stable/technique and is NOT a zoom. The Tamron and Sigma 100-400's are another very nice option - especially for hand holding.

I got a used Tamron G1 edition for $455.00...Wanted to use it for wildlife in Yellowstone a few months back but didn't see anything other than a few chipmunks the day we were there. The buffalo herds were in a different section of the park that day and my wife wanted to see all of the tourist attractions (with the busloads of tourists at them).. We will be going back next year though as our youngest son lives in Bozeman...So I'll get another chance to use this lens although I intend to put it to use around here. Just goes to show one that there are bargains to be had on this lens...

You can get a great deal on a new first generation right now 150-600, it is still a sharp lens.

I am a canon shooter for years, I use the tamron 150-600 lens, I bought my wife a Nikon P1000 and never realized what you can do with that camera, I have gotten out so much further.

I also recommend the Tamron 150-600 G2. I use mine for shooting softball and Lacrosse,
But it’s supposed to a good lens for wildlife.
It is a large lens, and easier to use with a tripod, or monopod. Look around for a used one, some are in excellent condition. Check Roberts Camera, Adorama, KEH, or B&H.

Good luck.

Either the Sigma or Tamron 150-600 lens should meet your needs. No need to change camera brands. I use the Sigma, but a friend of mine uses the Tamron with great results. I have had better luck with Sigma. I think either one would meet your needs.

Forgot to mention, also get a good tripod if you do not have one already. These lenses can be hand held, but for me it is better with some sort of support. Since you said your shooting from land there should not be a problem using a tripod or at least a monopod.

Perhaps consider the Sigma 150-600 with their teleconverter. I have this in a Nikon mount and it is a very nice lens with good reviews and comes in a Canon mount.

I hate being pedantic, but you've gotten in to some bad writing habits over the years. And it's not a typo if you repeat it...

Please:When to Use Lense (Never)
What does lense mean? Nothing.
Lense is a misspelling of lens. It rarely appears in edited writing and should be avoided across the board.
Almost no one uses lense in published books.
Lense and lens are two spellings that refer to the same word, only one of which is considered correct.
Lens is the correct spelling.
Lense is a misspelling that probably arises from the plural spelling of lens:
Since lense is a spelling error, think of the extra E in lense as standing for the word error.

My apologies for being critical, not of you, but your spelling.

S'cuse me but what is your photographic advice? That's actually what this forum is for, not grammar or spelling critiques. We know what he's saying and taking down a fellow Hog is not very noble or helpful. Thought you'd like to know.

At that price point, that has to be a fixed aperture Mirror lens

How about the Sigma 150-600? Can get a used Contemporary for reasonable price.

If you are serious about reaching out and really touching distant creatures is the Tamron 150-600mm G2. It is a very good lens and won't break the bank.
Anything else is an also ran.

What about the Sigma 150-600 Sport, if cost is only a secondary detail.

I'm glad someone finally addressed the ubiquitous misspelling of "lens." My flesh crawls whenever I see it. I haven't addressed it since we are a bunch of picture takers, not spelling masters. I expect the error to still happen despite its (NOT "it's!") flagging. Sigh.

Keith the issue is the camera. You can get a 18-270 but it is not worth the money to go to 270.
Consider the investment of a Nikon D500 with a Nikon 200-500 lens.

Pixie did you not read the post! He wants a lens NOT a camera Geez

the Tamron 150 / 600 G2 would be it .not too heavy , can be hand held , and easy to manual focus if needed .the auto focus is fast and accurate .the non G2 [ older ] is also fine , a slight lost of sharpness past 550 mm , can be found used around $ 600 .
