Hello HOG members.

My wife and I have become addicted to chasing the Orca whales around Puget Sound these days. The most beautiful thing I have seen in a long while. My problem is I only have a 55/250 canon lense on my EOS t2i. I most certainly need more power to get better shots from long distance. I am not going to change the camera just want a lense to reach out and touch those wonderful creatures.

I know there are many members that can help me upgrade my lense for this. Any and all suggestion are welcome.

Thank you in advance for all your assistance.

Keith the issue is the camera. You can get a 18-270 but it is not worth the money to go to 270.
Consider the investment of a Nikon D500 with a Nikon 200-500 lens.

The 400L 5.6 without IS should cost you less than $800. A great lens for the cost, keep the SS above 500 and no need for IS. Best bang for the bucks when reach is the issue.

Unlucky2, is the 400L a canon lense and good for the crop sensor camera?

Hello~
I'm really sorry to bring this up...
I hate being pedantic, but you've gotten in to some bad writing habits over the years. And it's not a typo if you repeat it...

Please:When to Use Lense (Never)
What does lense mean? Nothing.
Lense is a misspelling of lens. It rarely appears in edited writing and should be avoided across the board.
Almost no one uses lense in published books.
Lense and lens are two spellings that refer to the same word, only one of which is considered correct.
Lens is the correct spelling.
Lense is a misspelling that probably arises from the plural spelling of lens:
Since lense is a spelling error, think of the extra E in lense as standing for the word error.

My apologies for being critical, not of you, but your spelling.

Why do you people do this? The guy has a Canon. He asked about his Canon. He wants to get a longer reaching lens for his Canon. All the time on this forum I read a post when some one asks a specific question on a specific product, and sometime they will get a ton of responses suggesting the change brands. This seems to happen a lot with printer questions. Unbelievable.

Yes, the 400L should work just fine. I put on on my 7D (this has an APS-C crop sensor). Excellent lens.

I went with a Tamron 150-600 for my long tele needs. The 400L is fine but not as versatile. Are you shooting from a boat, or from land?

Yes, I used mine on my Rebel Ti1 and my 7D ( both crop sensor cameras) it is an Ef lens so you can take it with you when/if you move to a FF. The IQ is excellent and the weight is much less than a lens with IS. Try Ebay Craig list and KEH . L lens are well built so buying used is more likely than not to work in your favor.

Unlucky2,
Thank you for the info. I will look around and see what I can find. I am looking for something to shoot a long distance all the time. The whales really don't come very close to the beach. I thought of a zoom but I have other lens that will fit that mode.
Thanks again.

There are many great lenses which will give you more reach, but you will need to spend some money to significantly improve your reach. I would definitely recommend a zoom of some type for fast moving whales. A single fixed focal length lens would be pretty limiting for that type of shooting. A relatively low cost option would be the Tamron 18-400mm. There are many UHH members who use that lens and are very pleased with the results. It sells for about $500.00. The latest generation of the Tamron 150-600mm which has already been mentioned costs about $1,300.00 new.

And might I suggest that after you find a great deal on the 400 5.6 you keep your eye out for a TC (1.4) for around $100.

For capturing the whales, a zoom is better. With a fixed 400mm lens, it is difficult to find your target. But with the zoom, you can pull it back to 150mm, find your target, and then zoom in. In my experience doing whale watching, if the whale is too close, then the prime 400mm lens is a disadvantage. Here you want less focal length.

Many years ago, while in the Navy and crossing the Pacific, saw a most amazing pod of Killer Whales. They were traveling really fast. And I remember one of them was very large. Much larger than all the other Killer Whales. A really beautiful sight!
