I love photography because it is a form of Art that gives me the chance
of exposing my emulsions.

Thanks. I was not sure if a double-meaning/pun sentence could fit this particular section.

Fun way to introduce a discussion on "Why do we love photography?" Self expression is high on my list, too. Plus camera gear is a lot of fun to have and play with.

In the exposing of "my emulsions" is it really art? To me, if you take a manufactured product that is composed of metal, plastic, and glass. Then you take a variety of pictures with manipulated settings on your machine. You then take the plastic "card" and upload it to another manufactured product. You use another form of a manufactured software program that someone else designed you move a bunch of sliders around. Then having completed the process, you proclaim your self an artist. No. You are a photographer. Nothing wrong with that. Find something else to satisfy your ego.

Not nice, traderjohn! How about Ansel Adams...and many many more photographers who labor over their work to create beautiful things of beauty!
I'm in awe at some of the works displayed here...Looks like Art to me!

I agree with cameraf4: "Exposing my emulsions" is clever and fun. Thank you for the smile, Anhanga Brasil!

Re Gasman57's "develop the images in my mind" - whether using the camera exclusively (composition, light, exposure, depth of field and motion) or creating your final vision within the digital darkroom, the joy and art of photographic expression is boundless.

Many photographers have artist's eyes, some do not.
To me photography is a medium, like oils, pastels, etc.
Some people can use that medium to a great extent, creating art.

I try very hard to move those sliders around artfully.

I know about Ansel Adams. He took wonderful pictures. Laboring over a picture does not to me, make it art. They, in the end, have a nice picture. Some better than others.

What is ART? Most art is created with the use of tools. Art is artificial. A painter uses tools and manufactured products to create something. Likewise the sculptor. The writer needs tools as well, pencil, paper or computer; you get my point. The oral tradition of storytelling needs no tools other than the one common to all the creative processes, imagination. Some skill in whatever endeavor is attempted is a great help. Garry Winogrand, one of the photography teachers who influenced my understanding and vision, defined art as "the convergence of form and content." Each of these two elements threatens to overwhelm the other. Many of the Hedgehog discussions are about form, i.e. choice of lenses, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. These discussions are important because we all can learn from each other. On the content side of the equation, there is not much need for discussion, either the photograph tells the story well, or it doesn't. I believe many of us have had good ideas that did not work out because we did not manipulate our camera properly. Perhaps we have also had technically good photographs that did not "speak," or adequately tell the story.

I will now step down from my soapbox.
