Too much to read too much advice.
Over heating can be a problem. Open the case and take out all those fuzz bunnies. blow out junk and use brushes to clean the fins... be sure to blow out power supply and take those connections off and on several times to make sure connections are clean.

Down load avast and do an "on boot" virus search
Also go int start/run/msconfig and remove a lot of the junk from startup and use the selective startup.

If problem persists, take out all cards and put them back in several times ...thus cleaning contacts. Do the same for memory and for hard drive connections.

Leave the side of the computer off to aid cooling.

dont forget spybot...

good luck

Nothing personal, but no thank you, I DON'T want a Mac. Enough. I've heard it. From you, from others. You made your point. That's enough. Now, please drop it.

Yah! I have a son whose Mac just choked and died 'cause they don't know much about the himleich over at the Mac store. They can be clandestinely sweet at times when they're breathin' but when they die, they take your pocketbook with it, and if you're rural... Ya can get PC parts at the 7-11 all night long. And, Anabelle, I wouldn't hijack your thread if you were still having issues. You will notice that I kept my nose out of it. I am glad you figured it out. My hat's off to you. Very inventive, I'd say, and right over the top of all the yellin' that was going on.

Yup. That's the thing with Macs. When they are running, they are great. But you can't fix them yourself. You can't get the parts. You can't even open the case unless you are a licensed Mac technician. They don't run BADLY when they have a problem: they don't run at all. I have owned a LOT of Macs over the years. They are not what I want or need. For those of you that love them, enjoy.

But please, dear friends, do not try to push your preference down my or anyone else's throat. Talk about clogged up for a week, that is very uncool. I respectfully request the right to not agree with you and you should respect the rest of us, too.

Gessman is SO right: if you don't happen to live in or near a big city, you cannot get service for a Mac without shipping it back to the factory. You can buy one at your local Best Buy, or at least at some of them, but if your computer goes belly up (and don't believe that they can't: they can and oh boy they DO), you are deep in the soup and that terrific expensive computer is a doorstop.

Macs do get viruses. The only reason they don't get more of them is because there are fewer Macs and the nut cases who get their jollies making life hard for the rest of us prefer to target the bigger audience. I had Macs and I GOT viruses. If Mac users continue to crow about how you don't get viruses, I guarantee that the hackers who make viruses will take up the gauntlet.

There is absolutely nothing in the design of a Mac that prevents viruses. If you have one and are NOT running protection, you are living in a fool's paradise. And if you think nothing will ever go wrong with your computer, I hope you don't find out the hard way how very wrong you are.

Macs are wonderful for people who don't want to learn anything about computers, perfect for those whose technical knowledge can fit into a thimble. When you want to know absolutely nothing yet run a computer, there's Mac. And as long as you don't have a problem, you can continue to howl how terrific it is.

I always laugh when a friend with a Mac tells me that their computer dropped dead on them and they can't find anyone who knows how to fix it ... and Mac won't even tell them what it will cost if they send it back to the factory ... and they can't afford to replace it ... and what should they do?

"No idea," I say. "I don't have a Mac. I have a PC. Anyone can fix it."

Why talk down on people who use MACs. First you say not to badmouth people with PC problems then you go around and bad mouth MAC users.

Sorry to see people have PC issues but I spend more time repairing PCs than One MAC in 12years of IT issues. People have their own opinions and are entitle to them but don't see what does break. I have burnt four PCs since 1992 and have a MAC since 2005. Did replace the HD and graphics card but as they say how you use them is how they work, mine are treated with kid gloves and work fine no bad sites are visited and I have a robust workout on my MAC when it comes to photos since I shoot over 25k over a weekend. Post production gives the computer a good workout since uploading to lab and other sites take a lot of processing power.

My take.

au contraire, dear person. My comments were not aimed at people. They were aimed at the idea that buying a Mac was an alternative to having the problems inherent in the ownership of ANY computer. It is the Mac people who are smugly disillusioned and lulled to sleep with the idea that they are safe and secure by their ill-informed choice to own one. NOW, I have attacked Mac owners and therefore will be guilty as charged.

MAC would be a better option to get the job done for photos bottom line stop been a professor and give lectures. Look at solutions. Is this a forum for solutions or what? I speak from an IT experience and have been shooting since early 60.

Have fun people I am done with this topic.

Well Gessman, if they are going to hang for attacking disillusioned Mac owners they are going to burn me alive. And it will probability smell bad. Because I will question anyone that tries to convince anybody to buy a Mac, Windows PC, Linux system, Nikon, Canon... whatever base on their personal preference. We should get what fits our needs, budget, other personal requirements, of which only the user him/her self can possibility be aware of. As I used to tell people when they would ask what kind of kayak that they should get (I used to kayak...a lot), you don't let someone else pick your underwear don't let them pick your ... . Sorry about the crudeness, but some people just don't get it. There is no way any for us can possibility know what best fits someone else's needs. We can make reasonable recommendations, as most do by saying "I like my ..." but to say "you need a ...", "the ... is the only choice" etc is totally absurd :-).

My friend in California just had her Mac die from virus infestation. I warned her to get virus protection, but she was SO smug ...

Macs are fine machines, especially good for film editing and graphics design. They are the mainstay of every television station's editing room and are the best machines for that purpose. I never suggest that Mac users should go buy a PC. Choice is GOOD.

Each time someone has said "get a Mac, dump your PC" I did not take the bait. But it's rude to keep pushing it and annoying. I ran Macs AND PCs for over a decade. I eventually had to choose. I chose PC because it was more suitable for my purposes and much better value for the money AND PCs are easy to repair and upgrade AND there is a ton of software.

I haven't regretted my decision.

It's not like I don't know what a Mac is or have never used one. Bought one for my husband a few years ago and it died as soon as the warranty ran out. It never worked right. My husband hated it. I got him a Dell running XP Pro and he hasn't had a lick of trouble since. Tech support -- me -- is in the next room.

Everything has advantages and disadvantages. If I had the option, I'd probably run Linux. Now THAT is a stable system. Just ... none of my software will run on it. Oh well.

It is not a solution when a pc person is having a problem that needs to be fixed immediately to tell them to go buy a mac. I have a computer science degree from 1970 and have been doing pics longer. I have three sons who are in IT right now as we speak and one of those is the one who just had his mac die. We talk. They talk, I listen. I assimilate and add it to my own experience and I too have an opinion. I'll see your mac and raise you 2 pc's. I have 4 desktops & 3 laptops, no macs. me too - done!
