What Would You Buy?

If you were burgled or had a fire and all your gear was gone (and let’s assume insured), what gear would you buy to replace it? Assume that you have no bodies, lenses, flashes or other items that would tie you to a brand.

Generally, what do you currently shoot? What would you buy?

My main body is a Nikon D500 with plenty of good glass and a F100 that shares the glass. I also have a Mamiya M645 and a Fuji X-T2. If all that were to evaporate, I would:

Replace the X-T2 with the X-T3, my current 2 travel lenses and probably the 50/1.2 and one of the longer lenses. To replace my MF & D500, I would go with one of the two Fuji MF 50MP bodies currently on the market.

Not sure what I would do for film, but it would probably be a Hassy.

Good choice on the X-T3.

I currently use a D850 with about eight high end lenses. If this were to evaporate, I would look into the mirrorless market and I hear a lot of good things about Sony. My old film camera is a Canon A1 that is pristine but it is just a paper weight or a door stop so, it would not get replaced.

I am invested in Nikon, but if I had to do it all over again from scratch, would probably go with the Sony A7RIII. I like the compact size, performance and they are coming out with some great lenses. There is a lot of excitement around Sony's investment in new sensors and lenses. Looks like they are going to give the big boys a run for their money in mirrorless technology going forward.

I would buy (or I guess re-buy) what I have now: Olympus Trip 35's, and Nikon FE2 or FM2's and lenses. The Oly Trips for when I just want to snap and not even worry about focus, and the FM's or FE's for any other time.

I would say do you have homeowners or a separate rider on your photographic equipment.
I had a camera Nikon D800 I sold on ebay approved by ebay by email. It was delivered in AZ
and the police went their dont know what happened. UPS dont ask us.
I had State Farm for 30 years. They would not honor my insurance for stolen camera.

Have your gear on a rider and you will be able to replace with whatever you want.
And replacement value.

If I had the money, I would go with the X-T3, keep my 23 f2, get a 56 f1.2, the 50-140 f2.8 and maybe the 10-24 for wide angle - I don't do birding so I probably wouldn't need the 100-400mm because it's a monster! I would probably keep my 18-55mm as well just for general carry around since it is lighter ;)

I would replace my D800 with a D850, replace my f/2.8 24-70mm and f1.4 50mm prime. I would add a 14mm prime, the f/2.8 70-200mm zoom and a macro. And, I would not replace my other 10-15 lenses because the list I have made will handle anything I could imagine.

I'd go with pretty much exactly what we already have - Nikon D7100 (or maybe 7200) and an assortment of Nikkor and Sigma glass. Going FF is not going to happen - too heavy and bulky, and I'm not yet ready to go mirrorless, although I might get a compact Fuji or Sony and a couple of compact lenses.

It's more important to love what you have than to have what you love.

I think that he's posted a fun question to ponder. Helps you rethink how you've got what you've got.

I have a D90 with a couple lenses, a Canon G16, and an A6300 with the standard kit lenses, as well as a heavy duty Manfrotto tripod. If they were all stolen, I believe I'd replace them with a Sony RX10IV and a Canon G7X mkii for the pocket camera. I'm hoping that never happens, though. Which reminds me, I need to update my insurance on my gear.

I would go all with all mirrorless bodies for my digital kit.

And for film I’d probably buy a Nikon 35mm body, and I would also shop for a good used MF kit.

So I gues I would buy similar to what I have now but skip the D-SLR bodies in lieu of mirrorless. I’m happy with my lenses. The nut behind the lens is where improvement is needed and where improvement does the most good.

If my Nikon Df breaks I would simply buy a new one as they are still available new. I have close to 40 35mm cameras so I have enough for 35mm film. I may want to get a nice 4x5 view camera for film. I skip the medium format.

When I faced exactly that situation I did
not directly replace my large Nikon outfit
but instead I went with a less elaborate
Hasselblad outfit. Given my uses it made
made the most sense. That only shows
just how context dependent the answers
to the OP query must be. For instance I
would not do the same thing today, many
years after that break-in incident. Today I
would, if faced with that same bad news,
move to smaller gear instead of larger as
I had done years ago.
